OMG! NOOOOOOOO

ok. started car up first time for a week.

starts fine but noticed it was a little tappety. Drove 5 mins to work and by the time i parked up i could hear the tapping was even louder......

Really worried now so i have abandoned the car at work for now........

changed oil two weks ago and still has plenty of oil.......

any ideas...... is it rebuild time? The tappet does not sound as fast as a piston cycle . sounds half the speed... is this a lifter or worse?

Featured Replies

I would give it a good blast along the motorway - if its only went 5 mins the oil wont have reached temperature and as its sat for a week might take more than 5 mins to get cold oil through all the necessary points.

ok.... well hopefully this is the case.. was fine before it sat for a week.

the oil pressure often drops to 0 on idle though... oil pump or sender?

how much risk am i putting the car through to nurse it on a 30mph road home for 5 mins?

also to note. starting the car and driving to work took about 10-15 mins. temp was half way when i turn it off.... still a lifter? does't sound deep.. sounds light

Damien,

Don't, whatever you do, take the car out for a "blast" as suggest above. You really don't want to be doing any damage by overloading the components. Could be a lazy/stuck valve, noisy hydraulic lifter or it could be one of the belts with bits coming off that are hitting other parts of the car. You really need to get it investigated by a specialist like Jeff @ ZedWorld. I wouldn't automatically assume you need to rebuild the engine - these engines can take a lot of abuse before going pop (and going pop is a lot less frequent than what you are lead to believe) ... If I were you I'd let the car warm up to normal operating temp (ie, half way mark on the stock dash gauge) and then try to locate where the tapping noise is coming from. Failing that take it to a specialist.

Good luck.

unfortunately i am MILES away from jeff. miles from anyone really :-)

Hi mate,

You're not far from Mike @ MJP who is an expert on these cars too, I'm sure he'd have look for you if you ask... give him a call mate... His numbers in the traders section

Thanks

problem is it is still a drive. 20 - 30 mins.... have no way of carrying the car there or anything....... can't drive it there surely?

Give Mike a call... He'll at least give you some advice, are you an AA/RAC member? If you are get them to transport you...

true but just paid holiday to thailand....... leaving it in his garage will cost me big time

He doesn't own a garage but he does know a good mechanic and vets the work done himself... I would give him a call and see if he can do anything for you mate... just ask for advice first off...

Well... started the car this afternoon. noise lasted 2 secs then went. went for a steady drive and the noise has completly gone....

Santa helped me tighten loose pipes and the car:

Idles properly.

Does not smell of overfueling.

does not stall.

sounds nicer and is more responsive.

last but not least..... i get more boost. Not quite all the way to the right but one mark off :-)

Thanks santa for your help... winner.

I still get the power issue at high speeds where the car stops pulling for a second (after i have accelerated hard for 5-6 seconds) However this time i noticed te turbo gauge drops to half way below -7 and 0.

Santa also suggests this could be resolved after a few more jubilee clips are replaced..

one thing he did mention is that my mig tips are naff.

so question is.... do you think it is still leaks or maybe a fuel pump not activating it's higher voltage under higher load?

I know the turbo gauge may drop on a leak that gives out at higher load but if the engine is missing and holds for a second (no power) this would also cause the turbo needle to drop?

I may be a little hard to understand but i'm sure santa can clarify things clearer as i really have no clue

yes :-)

luckily i didn't need to drive it to see if it went anyway.i still believe it is risky thashing it on a highway. but as mine went on the second startup... needless to say my car will not be sitting for weeks anymore

cheers for al of your help.............. now to find out the pressure leak

Yeah this time , dont tell people to BLAST a car when the fault is not fully known. :headvswal

Well Im not a mechanic but I have done amateur motor racing , built maintained it - stripped and rebuilt a few engines in my time too - and owned over 50 cars - mostly high power and prestige so on occcasion I do know what Im talking about. I wouldnt advise anyone to do anything I wouldnt do myself and always give advise based on information given. If the symptoms were anything else I probably WOULDNT have said to him to take the car a blast but to a layman it was obvious what would fix it.

well either way :-) i'm greatful for the advice mate..... free help is better than no help and i'm glad it is sorted (the main thing)

cheers

Yeah if YOU had seen/heard the car and looked it over then fine you can give advise like that because you know the exact noise/location/tone and be happy your giving good advise, but you CANT going on another persons description.

I had EXACTLY the same described noise on an old zed of mine and a day later one of the cams seized and whole top of engine goes BANG!

If I had no real Zed/engine knowledge and I was told by someone on here to "blast" it and then that happened I would be far from happy.

ALWAYS advise investigation and caution not go ragg the arse off it and see what happens :nono:

Well theres one thing to bear in mind here - YOU followed someones advise and YOUR engine went bang - that was YOUR choice to make. Same goes for the guy following MY advise - it was HIS choice to make - so can we agree to disagree and put this to bed ?

Who said I followed anyones advise lol???

Either way you look at it, not knowing the full story you cant give that kind of advise fella.

Yeah damo played the noise down the phone to me , it was pretty loud and aggressive, so no way on earth a blast would have been helpful without actually being present at the car to assess, too much of a risk. looks like car`s been chipped in the past, jetted up n mucked about with.Christ knows who put the jets in..more bodge than the irish fella from fawlty towers. He needs to get rid if the bad lines n start again. Least it don`t stall round corners now. Got a dead o2 sensor, trips dead & coolant looks like mud.Hicas needs investigation.Damo made the classic mistake when buying this car n i`ll let him tell you...unless you guess first! Still, good way to learn about your car.

yeah any guesses? i didn't do it first time round but this time i................
