Everywhere I go, people always ask Why I bought the 300zx!.. It really irritates me. Every car show I have been to, their's hardly any 300zx's there..

The cars which get the most praise which really boils my piss are the Supra's and the Odd Skyline...

 

My 3 best friends have jap cars, One has a Supra, one has a GTO and the other an Rx7.. So we are always arguing over who has the best motor.. But, I know the 300zx is the best of the 3 in every way, and I know I am going to sound biased as I own one, but still...

 

The Rx7 with it's wacky engine.. and cramped interior doesn't do it for me..

The Supra is a good car but I still feel that fast and the furious done it the world of good, boosting up prices and popularity, just like the Rx7 for that matter.

The GTO, just looks like an MR2 on steroids, and is technically a dodge stealth..

 

For me, the 300zx has the nicest styling (Exterior and Interior), and thus being further complimented by lamborghini even taking the headlight design into it's diablos..

The Interior is far nicer than any GTO/Supra/Rx7, roomier, better feeling, and passengers have more comfort.. albeit the rear seats are cramped.. but nowhere near as bad as the other 3.

I'm no expert when it comes to Engines, but I reckon the VG30DETT is far superior in terms of strength to the other 3.

 

Anyways, my gripe is that the 300zx is such a great car, and a Classic, but the other cars of the same "league" and "generation" The supras, gtos and Rx7s.. just seem to get more praise?.. When they are no where near as good and dont offer the same standards as the ZX... What happened for the 300zx to never get asmuch hype as the others?... Back to what I said earlier about car shows, nobody seems to know much about the ZX either, people always ask me "How Fast is it" and "You don't see many of these around"..

 

I hope the put a ZX in the next fast and furious movie, because I can guarantee everyone will want one and our re-sale prices if we ever chose to sell will rocket up... But I can't see it happening...

That and it carries a Nissan badge the trdaemark of the old and ethnicly inclined.

 

Its only the people who really know about the cars that know how good they really are.

I don't believe the car to be underrated, I just think it has an image problem. It's odd as the Z32 on launch was very well rated indeed and wiped the floor clean of the mk3 supra, GTO and was up there with the Porsche 928.

 

Its image has degraded over the years due to the fact that newer cars in the same league from other manufacturers have super seeded it which have been marginally better and have been newer. The Mk4 supra, as ugly as it is was also well rated. These have never really been replaced by anything, neither has the GTO, which, to be honest has a pretty dowdy image too. The Z32 has always seen to be the poorer relation to the Skyline and you will always get asked 'why didn't you just get a Skyline' comments. BUT, most people that bought the Z, didn't want a Skyline to begin with. I could have bought one when looking for mine, it just didn't have what I was looking for in a car.

 

There are also, or rather 'were' huge volumes of tatty, smokey unloved examples which have given the car a rep it shouldn't have deserved bringing the prices of them to rock-bottom. The monkeys then got hold of them, chaving them up with fibreglass clap-trap, shoddy body kits and tasteless accessories driving the image of them through the floor.

 

Older people appreciate this type of car as they know what it is capable of. Younger people 'the fast and furious generation' think of them as just a cheesy luxo barge and don't hold it in high regard.

 

I think their image is on the up. Most of the really poor examples have been scrapped. The car has turned back into an enthusiasts car, its rarity value is getting better and the grey-import market has all but dried up. Most cars that are left tend to be better looked after versions too.

 

That's just how I see it.

Probably because its not really been in many films and people dont know what they are looking at.

 

In F&F they are building a 10 second car, if had to to choose what to start with it would be a supra, far easier and cheaper to mod for big power over the 300.

 

GTO's imo are crap the engine is the wrong way round and the drive system saps power

 

Rx7's are sweet! handle mint and rotor's are awsome engines, pitty everyone is afriad to work on them and rotor tips have such a bad rep. You cant compare an rx7 to a supra, gto or 300 its not built for the same market, go compare it to an mr2 turbo.

MR2 Turbo? The two cars couldn't be any different. Neither were developed to compete against each other. A 2 seater mid engined 4 cylinder sports car vs a 6 cylinder 4 seater front engined GT?.....or were you referring the RX7 to the MR2...kinda see where you're coming from there (size wise anyway)

 

Supra Vs 300zx Vs GTO (3000GT) has always been the main contenders in the UK market.

 

RX7 is a bit of an odd-ball...a nice one I might add. Shame the w@nkel engine sounds so shite and droany though....just like Honda engines.

I like the fact it's rare then I always try to be a bit different having owned a renault 21 turbo and a rover 420 turbo I don't care what anybody else thinks anyway

i guess its because on average the Z is the oldest of the cars in that 'group', and isn't designed as a street tuner, therefore not appearing in films or on track as much as the others, and therefore not getting as much attention. if a Z was winning Le Mans and BTCC then it would be the king of the road and everyone would want one! all cars from the GTO to the Evo, from the RX-7 to the Poop, from the Scoob to the MR2, all have their own good points, but in my honest (completely unbiased opinion ;) ) the Z is the best average. perhaps thats what makes it the 'grey man' and therefore overlooked.

Everybody I know thinks its a great car and love it, I can usually put a smile on there face with a quick blat down the road if they are non belivers

 

In the motoring press is was very highly rated as a looker and a performer pitted against its main rivals.

Coming home from work on Monday evening, i stopped to get some fuel on the A14 in a BP garage. On the pump next to me was a Porsche 911 Turbo. (old boy filling the tank, and the Porsche was only 2 years old!!) Went to pay for my fuel, 2 lanes to pay, and the old boy was next to me at the same time for payment. 2 young chaps taking the money, the 1 taking mine says "fantastic looking motor mate, what is it?", I replied, "It's a Nissan 300zx, and see the Porsche next to me.....I will eat that!!" The old boy turns, and looks at me, then pays and walks back to his Porsche, obviously thinking..... he is right!!!

I really love my 300zx bud, but a 2 year old 911 Turbo....eat it? Not sure about that! A 2006/7 has close to 500bhp stock, hits 60 in 3.6 & 100 in under 9 seconds....Not to mention will leave you for dead round the bends.

rx7, mr2 turbo, s2000 are all small light chuckable sports cars

 

300, supra, gto are all heavy GT crusiers

 

You dont see many auto mr2 turbos do you!

Well, I hope your right Si with regards to them being on the up. I'm very enthusiastic about my Z, just like the rest of you guys. It was just the comments like "Why did you get one?!" and "You should of gotten a Skyline" which makes me think, - Do people really have no clue!?

It's weird though, because I read about these cars becoming rarer/classics.. then I see some Z's that are worth more in scrap/parts than as a whole..The Z's image needs a big boost IMO

"standard 300, maybe...." There is no maybe! A 997 911 Turbo would completely destroy a Standard 300zx TT.

And as nice as your car is, I doubt it can match the best Porsche can offer...a £100k car with bang up to date technology, 500bhp & 500Ib/ft torque.

My money would be on the Porker.....

Don't get me wrong though, I love the ZX.

 

Ah well, we can talk about it all day long, give Top Gear a shout. See if the Stig can test the 2 back to back round the track!

Not taking sides here, but people always seem to neglect to mention the drivers capabilities! Just cos a car is worth a fortune and has fancy technology, does'nt necessarily make it faster than another type of car if the driver is shit. If its all automatic and the person just has to point and squirt in a straight line then fair enough - no chance, but if they're not a 'good' driver then they can quite easily be beaten.
