hi i'm having major problems with my power steering. it used to be an intermittent problem with the speedo, but now there is no powersteering but the speedo does work most or the time.

i have cleened all the connections behind the dash, cleaned the connector to the solinoid by the steering rack, and disconnected the speedo converte.

the problem i found though is with the engine at idle i am only getting 1.6v at the solinoid. i know this should be 5v, so traced it back to the smaller ecu and i am getting 1.6v out of the ecu. now i'm stuck. does this mean a faulty ecu or could it be anything else? or is there anything else i can check please help!

would be nice to find out what it is..... my car is also having power steering issues . I start every journey with power steering for 5 mins then the steering gets heavy until i start the car up next.....

sorry to hijack thread but depending on who gets theirs fixed first we can help each other solve this one :-)

yer mine needs an MOT now can't take it in like this! don't know if to buy an ecu or not???

i've not checked it yet, i'll try it tomorrow. how do you test the speed sensor? i know where it is on the gearbox, but should it be tested with a multimeter? if so what should i test for and what readings should i get? cheers

fairly certain from what you describe it will be a clock related issue...do you have indiglo clocks that light up blue etc? or a speed converter fitted to make kph mph? its possible something on the clocks is shorting, this can take down the voltage line to all sorts of odd things like hicas/power steering speedo etc

HTH

well on mine personally.... my MPH just stopped reading... power steering gets heavy after a few minutes and at high speeds i get sudden split second power losses, despite having new injector plugs and sparkies

what about yours jay009?

mine is just random! sometimes the speedo works, it used to stop working when the steering did but now the speedo works most of the time but the steering just doesn't work!

i've just been looking at it again now and the speedo sensor seems fine.

what is meant by dry joints on the cpeedo circuit board? i have taken the speedo cluster out and cleaned all the big block connectors that push in the back and still no luck. tryed disconnecting everything and then tested the ecu - still 1.6v. i was thinking it was the clocks but i think i've tested everything. it is fitted with a speed converter but no blue lights.

I'd be wary of using the car till its fixed, I had a similar problem with my silver tt. I over compensated a back end wiggle in the rain and ended up in two crash barriers:(

can't drive it at the mo because the MOT has ran out lol. anybody got any ideas?

the solder hasnt set to the component basically...usually you can see a ring around the component leg caused by partial remelting of the solder...bad joint

hi been working on the car again today, stripped all the speedo again but still couldn,t find anything wrong, but now the speedo works all the time! but still no steering :-(

i am still gettin 1.6v down to the solinoid and this does not change whether im driving stationary or even if the speedo unit is completely disconnected, its always the same

aaarrrgggghhhhhhh

If you have a soldering iron remove your clocks, use the soldering iron to reflow the soldered joints on the back of the dials. If you have a solder extractor it might be an idea to remove the old solder and add some fresh solder if you have any. I think funkysi just did his so he might have pics.

i can give it a go, so its still likely to be the speedo itself even though the actual gauge works at the moment? pics would be really uesfull, thanks

Also go over the solder joints on the power steering controller. Did that for a guy out here in NZ and it fixed his even though they (the solder joints) didn't look too bad

where is the power steering controller? is that the box behind the ecu in the passenger footwell?

does anyone know where i can buy a second hand gauge cluster from or anyone even have one for sale? im not too sure which joints to solder, looks like a mini comprter on the back of the gauge! also what sort of price am i looking at? its a 91 jap import tt. theres not much on ebay
