When we bought our puppy we bought a whole heap of reference books, most of which were rather dull and difficult to follow. This is a very clear book, very easy to understand and great to have at hand at all times. It clearly explains what is right and wrong -a great book to keep on hands for those panic moments and just to keep by the bed for reassurance. We thought we knew a lot about dog training but alot of it is old wives tales, this really makes things as unstressful as possible for both owner and puppy.

Hello bud,

Classes are a good thing for sure, gives you the knowledge you need to understand how your dog thinks ;) Even if it just gets you back to the basics it's worth it IMO :)

yep prob trying to be alpha male, we sorted that out early on and its the wife who now has the battles :D.

Were starting classes soon just to get the added control as bacchus is estimated to be around 15-16st when fully mature:D

or you could just poke him with a shitty stick;)

im taking max to classes, but you have to put time in yourself too, and correct Riddick where he's going wrong.

you need to start being a bit mean to him mate...yes mean:),he needs showing who's boss and its the only way to be with dogs as they are a lot happier to be put in there place (its the pecking order) to be nice all the time and treat the dog like a human friend is attually cruel to the animal:)

he knows who is boss, well usually, he has had the odd (well quie a few lol) cracked arses, he is just trying to be the alpha male as djtomo says, ourlass is always kissing and cuddling him and leting him get away with things

I bet the dog gets away with more than you do. Bloody typical with women.

All seriousness though, your misses is going to have to toe the line with him, and make sure that he is number three in the pecking order. He must not get away with any misbehaving. Big dogs need firm (not cruel) handling hence the reason, what some of the bigger dominant breeds can get bad names e.g. Rottweilers, German Shepards etc

cut his *****cks off?

I remember Me Dad having that done to "Calm Down" his Cocker Spaniel

Turned into a real evil ******* after:(

Mind you if I woke up with me Nads missing I would be a touch miffed

He'll definately need castrating if it's not already been done. We keep Dalmatians and my other half used to breed Alsatians so can understand what you're going through mate!

How are you training him? My advice is to start him from scratch with food refusal i.e. place the food in front of him and give him the command to leave it until you release him. Then once he's got the hang of that (and has had it re-enforced that obediance = treats) go back through the basic sits, stays and lie downs.

Obediance classes do help and we took both our Dog and Bitch to one and it really helped...the Dog was a little sh1t until we did! :D

One of the biggest things though is to make sure they know their place in the pack. Until he's calmed down and more obediant he shouldn't be allowed on chairs/sofas/beds etc and should have all four paws on the floor at all times ie if he jumps up to greet someone he gets told off. It's their way of asserting dominance and although it's cute when they jump up to "cuddle" while you're sat down etc in their minds it's their way of asserting their place in the pack.

he never gets on chairs or beds and so on, or not when im in e doesnt, we are gonna start from scratch and change his diet incase its the food making him hyper, thing i keep forgetting is cause he is so big, that he is only just a puppy (9.5 months)

wil keep at it lol

In that case he's got tonnes of time to learn :) Yeah, diet is something that a lot of people overlook, you're definately doing the right thing by seeing if it is that that's making him hyper...we've had to change foods several times to find the right one...it can be a right pain in the ass, lol! :D

ive had dogs most of my life, but they have been mongrels or collies, they are easy to train, riddick is a mastiff type dog and can be quite stubborn, ive had him sitting now for the past half hour with a tripe stick about a foot away, he keeps getting up and trying to get it but i keep stopping him lol
