Heya,

When i bought the car the previous owner told me that the timing belt had been replaced last April at 65k milage.

I had a quick look through the receipts on purchase and everything seemed fine.

Just had another look whilst looking for my MOT documents and the receipt actually says:

'Adjusted Timing', so i think i must of misread it skim reading when i bought it :-S

The car is now on 72k and i have no idea when or if the timing belt has been replaced other than the word of the seller (which doesnt seem to match receipts).

ive just had it serviced and new brakes and stuff so cant really afford a timing belt service for a few months, is it something i should be really worried about? I know if it goes the car is fooked but surely it would have been replaced before now :-S

Why not give it a go yourself?

It's not all that difficult a job, if you have basic car mechanical knowledge! There are on-line how-to's to see you through as well

Dave

You can get hold of the parts very easily (genuine NISSAN ones) and, like I say, there are how-to's on it.

I did mine about four years ago, at the beginning of January, outside with no cover! I took a week off work, and just plodded along following the guide to the letter. Struggled a little bit here and there, and my dad came and gave me a bit of a hand, but finished it in three days if I remember correctly. That was starting about 10 in the morning, stopping for a few tea breaks and finishing at about 4 in the afternoon (as the light was fading)

Here's a link to one >>http://www.ttzd.com/tech/60ktech.html

Hope that helps..... and a quick one of mine during the operation...

bout 50 for the belt kit and a couple of hours to do it yourself. its not that hard

A belts £50 but the idlers and tensioner will set you back £250 ish.And these almost always need changing as the heat melts the grease in the bearings eventually and they go dry and sieze up.

My belt was changed by Zedworld & they placed a sticker on the cam cover with date and mileage on.

If yours does not have a sticker or any other indicator, why not just give them a call. I'm sure they will keep records of work done, especially if not too long ago. It might just save you some worry & a job!

While your at it change the water pump as its right in the middle of everything, worth doing while you can get to it. Belt, idlers, water pump cost me a little over 200 and did it in 6hrs.

wow thanks for such a monumental and quick reply lol. Ill check for a sticker, and give zedworld a ring :-)

If you do it your self you may as well change the water pump too, you would kick your self later if it went

A quick link to the first post I put when I did mine.. http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=362764&postcount=1

Apart from the 'Other' goodies I was fitting at the same time, the 60k service kit was..

1) Cam Belt,

2) Water Pump,

3) Tensioner,

4) All associated bits 'n bobs, (springs, seals stubby hoses)

5) 3 x Belts,

6) Thermostat

All of which come in a kit together, got mine from **** Not allowed to give links out e-mail me at 'anubis4120 @ msn.com' without the spaces or speech marks ;)

If I remember rightly Jeff at Zedworld would probably have a record of all the work he has done going by the license plate.

May be worth giving him a call and seeing if that is correct.

really? i thought it would be a nightmare and set me back about £350 or something?

well with all the other bits n bobs it probably will cost that mate....basically if you do a cam belt you're well advised to do the rest...i.e fit a 60k kit as dave posted previously...as jobs go not too hard if you have the right tools you'll need the large socket for the crank nut 27mm i think (a big help is a 3 leg gear puller if the crank is jammed on tight) some long nose pliers and hex bolt tools to remove the cam covers....if you havent got them you will have a nightmare

cheers

Just a quickie .

I have never seen and idle or tensioner siezed up or damaged in anyway on a z due to normal wear and tear.

Even the belts are very strong. And never seen a belt break by itself before either.

And iv been doing these things since the 80's

So keep your cost's down keep it simple. Do the belt .

Check and replace other parts if nec only.

Do they have specsavers in kent?

imo dazkent seems to be correct in the fact that there is no point in replacing things that dont need replacing.

I think a lot of it is down to just how much mileage and wellie your are going to give it. If like me you drive like miss Daisy and all seems fine with the other parts, then just change the parts you can afford to change, If on the other hand you do a lot of miles and drive like your arse is on fire do a 60k service. Just my view on it.

spelling

I don't know what year the car is but with the sound of it the belt and other bits have been on it since new, so they are 15 to 20 years old. Nothing lasts forever !! and if as Jummer says, the idler seizes, then it will not just be this that will require replacing.

think i might just take it to Zedworld and get the to do a belt change and water pump change. as mentioned before, prevention is cheaper than the cure. I do drive the car hard (cant help it lol, it wants it.), its a 91 NA, i really must make a sig lol.

Its just a pain as i just got it serviced lol (in which 3 wheel studs snapped off :-S).

its a bit of a trek for me (York) but will be worth it. Im trying to get the Z to perfect health again. Think the previous owner knew less about cars than i do! (which is scary)

EDIT: AH now i can edit posts! Subscribed early :-)
