I usually put Castrol Magnatec in coz its a decent price, you get plenty of it, and its designated for advanced engines etc... Idont want to go down the route of Mobil 1 coz its unfeasibly expensive and a bit too thin for my liking...Anyway, on my last oil change I ran some STP engine flush through before dumping the old and putting new stuff in, however, this time I'm thinking of dumping the old out first, putting some cheap oil in and running round the block - gently, and then adding the flush in to get rid of as much gunk as I can before putting the new stuff in - I've done this beofre, but not on my 300...Anyone got any 'Good god dont do that!' comments or ideas?

Thanks!

Hey, I would be interested in any advice on this one aswell. Not so much for my Z as that's ok. But I've also recently acquired a Merc Cosworth that had a full engine rebuild b4 I got it. The Merc has done 163,000 big ones and when I mentioned to my Brother that I was thinking about flushing the engine he went NO...NO...NO!!! He seems to think that the engine flush can free up some of the carbon deposits that can build up in the cylinders and can then maybe start engine probs. Is this true or is it fairly safe to use these flushy thingys???

you can get mobil 1 motorsport which is 15-50. Ive just put it in because I was getting a 2 second top end rattle on cold starts with thinner 5-40 oil. If you look in the manual it says you should be using around 10 or 15 weight oil. Some people wont even look at anything other than standard mobil 1 but I would rather take the advice of the people who developed and tested the engine rather than the sales hype on the label of a can of oil.

Bilky,

I have played the Mobil 1 vs Castrol RS game and . .

If you use your car every day use Castrol RS.

I found Mobil 1 (wot U buy from halfords cant remeber the viscosity) makes the car very loose but can be noisy especially on high milage engines on start up.

Castol runs the enigine a bit tighter, but I guess the engine has more longevity as there is less noise.

TSK for my Z, I buy (Castrol RS) and get SE to fit it so I can't remmeber the viscosity.

I have had a Silvia Turbo, 200SX where I have played with the oil (Castro Vs Mobil 1) and found as mentioned that Mobil 1 gives you a looser car and Castrol RS gives you a tighter car with less lifter noise.

These things get tricky and I think it really depends what you want out of the car.

The US peeps on TT net seem to love engine flush but it can cause oil-leaks so I am waiting until I can afford an engine re-build before I play;-)

PS Timmy you need to be a little more descriptive on you Merc probs!! For ME anyway!

PPS If any of this sounds likes bollocks that's cos I am online and half way through a bottle of Vodka :-)

Hey Tim, those Merc cosworths are even rarer than uk manual tts m8!!!

i have also heard that engine flushing on a high milage car can cause engine proplems because the carbon build up help the engin seal its self round the cylinders

So far then I think I'll miss out the flush this time, but to try and change out as much old oil as pss I'll run some cheap oil through the system and then drain that out before putting the good stuff in. That way I hope it will be as clean as possible for the engine.

thanks!

Anybody tried those magnetic sump plugs or oil filter bands ? Just wondered whether there is enough ground up ferrous material in the engine to make them worth it.
