Electric Fan - Is it for extra water cooling - or...

...related to the Air Conditioning?

I have removed all of the air-con - and I am checking that the electric fan is for the benefit of the engine cooling - not the passenger cooling :D

Featured Replies

its the A/C fan that cuts in with the A/C and also when the engine gets too hot, i think around 100 deg.

if you still have the viscous fan then i would keep it but, some people have removed the A/C fan when swapping the viscous to an electric with no problems. i myself have only run one electric (16") fan for a few years with no problems what so ever

:)

Thanks Silverbullet - you managed to anticipate my next question ;-))

Did you wire the new 16" fan into the old Aircon fan supply/switch/thermostat? Or fit a new inline thermostat - and if so where is the best place for that?

I assumed that the (now retired) air con fan would not be powerful enough to be used as a replacement for the viscous unit - and I want to bin the viscous unit so...

I have ordered today a 16 inch (capacity 2540 Cubic Feet Minute) electric unit that I plan to put on the outside of the rad and push rather than pull. I am pushing cos I think if I pull then a custom shroud will be required that I plan to make a custom shroud that fits the fan but also allows ram air through the sides/bottom that would otherwise be limited by the fan.

There is a lot of info on the Aussie site [below] regarding this topic that is very useful - and of course it's a good deal warmer out there as well.

I hope that helps someone else also. I will post progress when I have some.

Cany EDIT!

Meant to say..

I am pushing cos I think if I pull - then a custom shroud will be required that allows air to also pass in through the sides and bottom that would otherwise be disrupted by the shrouded fan. I believe that by pushing (having the fan on the outside) most of this ploblem goes away as the ram air will find its way around the fan into the rad/engine anyway. Racers use push more than Pull I am informed - someone will confirm/deny I am sure ;-)

im using a pull to draw the air through.

i had mine set up on a thermo switch coming out of a collar in the top short water pipe. i've now since wired the fan into the A/C fan supply and set it to switch on at 75deg and go off at 80deg but, thats with a stand alone ecu

Cheers, at what temp does the Aircon fan kick-in and cut-off do we know?

And I notice you use a balance bar across your throttle bodies - what is the advantage of that setup and is it related to twin pops? Nice car BTW.

thanks dude, the balance bar is there just to equal out pressure as the passanger turbo has around 2 foot more pipe work than the drivers turbo.

as far as i can remember, the A/C fan will kick in at around 105deg just as a last ditch atempt on keeping the engine from cooking.

i'l be at Z009, japfest and the rolling road day (23rd) if you're about. you're more than welcome to have a nose over the old girl

  • 2 weeks later...

ive just removed the air con,

is there any point me keeping the airon fan?

ive just got the standard viscus on the car, which i beleive does the job of cooling the car, well no probs yet.

i dont like having un-neccessary things in the engine bay!

I junked mine - but I added a 3000CFM 16" electric fan and also junked the viscous fan on the water pump.

I also removed all of the aircon piping in the engine bay - do I need to block/blank the two bulkhead connection points to the cabin???

Its primary role is as an emergency overheating fan, rather than for the aircon....so its role is still very important.

I removed mine, but I have a water temp gauge with warning features and my car is for the track/weekend toy, where it wont be sitting in traffic jams. Removing it allows for improved airflow to the Main radiator. I personally would not recommend removing it to anybody else though.

No you dont need to block/blank the bulkhead connections.

hmm ok.

is it a good idea to keep the fan, but to wire it so its always on?

i dont track the car or anything, but i know cooling is an issue with these cars so dont want to make things worse.

no, dont have it on permantly. Its programmed to come only when temperature reaches a certain point...and its perfect leaving it that way.

Why would you want to get rid of a viscos fan for an electric one??

Would an uprated rad be ok with the std fan??

people do it for the performance gains of less drag, but it can be a bit of a headache to get setup working correctly...plus no electric fan can pull as much CFM has the stock fan.

Yes, stock fan is fine with uprated rad.

So its mainly for the track then as i doubt you will notice any drag on a road.

Also if your engine temp always stays good is there any point to an electric one??

I just want a nice shiney rad
