Hello All

Right i'll try to explain this as best as i can, having just purchased a HID kit, i thought i'd fit them today, no probs with the passy side works ok, did the drivers side, no good, the light flickers but doesnt stay on, so pluged the drivers side ballast and bulb into the passy side worked ok. Right so then i disconnected both HID and pluged the normal bulbs back in. the passy side works ok tested with meter 12volts no probs, now the drivers side has 12v at the clip but as soon as you plug the bulb in you only get 3 volts and for some reason both the main beams come on all be it very very dim, so somehow they are robbing the power from the drivers side dipped beam, but it only occurs when i plug the drivers side dipped beam bulb in, the passy side has no issues. any ideas coz its really doing my head in, i cant understand why as soon as you plug the bulb in the volts drop to 3 and the bloody main beams come on, even though the stick position is set to off. anyone know where to look????

Not heard of that before, but the main beam comes on if the fuse blows, although you have power to the dipped may indicate a knackered relay?

not sure mate... strange one that...

ditto id say sticky relay i had the main beam thing when the fuse blew, had no idea how to fix or what had gone wrong weird car the 300zx!! lol!

Main beam come on when the fuse blows so that you can still drive i the dark... kinda like a safety feature.. although if the fuse blows for that not sure what would happen lol....

I think its the brown relay at teh bottom of the large fuse holder in the engie bay, try swapping with another relay... see it that cures it..

This happened to me the other week. Has your headlights had the earthing mod done to the main bulbs. What happened to me was the fuse blew for the left hand side dip bulb. This then caused the main beams to come on slightly because they were getting a backfeed from the earth mod. Also the main beam indicator on the dash was slightly on. Just might be the same issue bud. When i pulled the bulb out everything went back to working order. Check the fuses in the engine bay;)

thanks all, problem solved. How stupid do I feel. It was the 15A fuse to the divers headlamp blown, just didnt think it would be that as both the main beams were alight, all be it very dim, i might of blown it when i earthed the negative wires from the hid to the chassis, oh well you live and learn, thanks again all is working now.

yep ...always . always always disconect the battery when doing any elecrical work on a zed the electrical system is so strange that earthing problems , voltage drops caused by blown fuses etc are all too common if the system is not made electricaly dead first before being worked on
