Hi - I am being poncy and having my Crank Sprockets chromed like Luke's - I am quite scared about removing them though - should I be? :D

I have a sprocket puller so... put down some timing marks, loosen the belt and remove the sprocket - it's that simple right?

Have a good weekend guys n gals

yeah ok, you will have to re do the timming after obviously! ...but apart from that its straight forward, there are 4 nuts on each cam sprocket to undo, then give them a litlle tap & they might pull off easier but whatever you do dont use the front out ring with a pulling tool..( i did this & pulled the outer ring off!!!!!)

The exhaust cam sprockets are four bolts, the inlet cam sprockets are a single 19mm bolt behind the gold coloured plate held on with 4 screws. When you take the plate off be careful as there is a spring behind it which is under compression.

One piece of advise would be to crack the nuts before you remove the cam belt as it can be a pig to hold each sprocket in place to undo the bolts otherwise. You can use the cambelt 'wrap' technique (do a search on here and twinturbo.net) but I managed without.

Thanks Guys - much appreciated - I am slightly worried about moving something out of timeline and messing my engine when I put stuff back together and firing her up.

DO I need to put down any marks at all - after setting Cyl 1 to TDC etc etc??

OK - I am back on this now - Funny how you keep putting off jobs that you don't really want top do!!!!!

Anyway - thanks for the comments above - surely I need to loosen the cam belt tensioner first right?

And that must mean removing the Cam Pulley at the bottom to get access under the stupid metal cover with the timing mark right?

Or can I slip the CAM sprokets off by stealth and effort - and if so how do they go back on?

Any help appreciated.

...And I assume the two top cam sprockets are key-wayed - so they can only go back on the way they came off right?

Cheers.

BTW - forgot to mention 60K was done last year so I dont want to damage/cut any belts ;-)

I've read that you have to put a 6mm bolt in the tensioner first before touching anything to stop it from fully extending.

OK it's all off/done - phew!

Was very careful not to move anything and I marked the belt/sprockets up as well with tippex and a physical mark (as everything is getting chromed next week).

I am still convinvced that she will never start again - but heyho - we live and learn ;-)) or die trying!

Thanks for the PM's and to 300 zed above for reminding me about the tensioner bolt trick - just gotta get it back on net week now ha ha lol ;-)
