I bought my 300zx with the air con belt missing, Paul (previous owner) said he never realised, is there a reason why someone may have removed this belt? Or is it likely to have just come of and someones not bothered putting one back on?

yep..usual reason is to up the bhp by removing the parasitic drag of the air con unit on the crank...that or its out of gas / fooked etc so just cut it off

Aircon compressor could have seized.

Removed in the belief it will save power/be more economical - The Z cuts the compressor off when you floor the throttle anyway if it is switched on to give you every bit of power and then switches back on when you're done.

Could just have failed and not been replaced.

before you rush off and buy a belt well worth checking if it still has the air con radiator in otherwise you're wasting time/money fitting a belt...the air con rad is infront of the rad...sandwiched between the rad and sub fan almost same size as water radiator.

cheers

Yeah could have been stripped out and the compressor left in as it's a real pain to get out unless you know what you are doing.

Also check if there's any gas in it first by looking in the little glass window on the pipework (if the pipework is still there!)

Good thinking batman! :D

Im not too fussed, im not sure if i want it or not, would be nice i suppose.

The compressor is not seized, nor does it make any unusual noises when being spun. So i was thinking perhaps it needs regassing.

Another thing as i havnt got familiar with the Zed engine bay yet, but where do i find the air con rad? Save me searching around for it, i did have a very brief look but couldnt see it in any obvious place, surely its infront of the main rad and viscous fan to keep it cool?

Aircon compressor will just spin freely unless it's switched on by the dash button. A solenoid engages it and I presume it will lock up and be harder to turn.

Aircon radiator is in front of the water radiator and behind the air filter with a big electric fan on it.

Not sure!

I presume it will be stiff to turn but no idea how much force it takes from the belt normally.

he said turn the aircon on, not tur the aircon pump lol

Yeh see my plan was, to turn the aircon on, look at the pump and go hmmmm, yeh could need a new compressor and re gas!

Could i turn the compressor pulley if its on anyway? Or would it be really stiff?..............the compressor.......

I thought I answered that above before Stella got his knickers in a twist! LOL

So you did, but how stiff? Stiff enough not to turn? And is it a commen fault for the compressor to ummm break??!

god knows how stiff bud....anyway do you have an aircon rad and the pipes still otherwise dont waste a second worring about the pump :)
