Is there any reason why I should have real trouble buffing off polish from my bonnet, but no trouble at all buffing it off the wings and boot lid (they're just the randoms areas I've tried so far)? Anyone experienced anything like this?

That rings a bell from when i first got mine , but it had'nt been waxed in a while to be fair, lol

Also find it happens if you wax late on in the day when there's that bit of extra moisture in the air

Try claying the car before you polish. You'll find it easier that way and you'll get better results. :)

The bonnet being hot would make sense, although I always though it would be the other way round - being more difficult on a cold panel because the polish wouldn't dry as well. I'll have to give a go then when it's cold.

Stupid question - how do you clay? and can you point me in the direction of the necessary materials?

Thanks, Phill

This little tutorial should tell you all you need.

you can not polish a hot bonnet even if your car is out in direct sun light you will have problems poilishing any part of the car especially if it is black

Z's bonnet doesn't get that hot unless it's in direct sunlight or you've removed the underbonnet lining.

I think i might clay mine soon. never done it before. what would it be like on fresh paint??

Pointless I'd have thought.

It's intended to remove the old crud that adheres to the paint surface.

A friend reckoned it brought his new paint up even better when he did it (about 4 months after having it sprayed)

Thanks for the advice chaps. I bought the clay kit from Halfords (Meguiars) this weekend and did the car with it, and then keeping the car in the shade this time I had another go at polishing, and it worked far better this time. Don't know if it was the claying or the lack of heat that did it, probably a bit of both!

Anyway, if anyone doesn't mind giving a bit more advise I've got another question now! - I'm quite pleased with the way the car's come up, apart from the fact that every microscopic (and not so microscopic) little stone chip has now been filled with polish, leaving white dots everywhere! Is there a way of removing this so it doesn't look like it's got some strange form of car acne?! Or have I got to put up with it until I can afford a respray?

What i have done before is fill all the chips with a little blob of paint on the end of a pin or somthing sharp. Make sure the paint is pround of the chip. Leave it to dry over night (it will looks a mess) then buff it all back the next day so it is flush with the original paint.

If you have done it properly it will look perfect
