Car Scrappage Scheme...

as if this will work - Its only going to make the goverment lose more money and tax us heavily next March to make up for their balls up

• From next month until March 2010 motorists to get £2,000 discount on new cars if they trade in cars older than 10 years

• They will have to show they been the registered keeper of the vehicle for the previous 12 months before ordering the new car

• The government will provide £1,000 with the industry expected to provide the other half

Fuel Duty....

• Fuel duty to rise by 2p per litre from September, then by 1p a litre above inflation each April for the next four years

Hmmm :xxx:

correct, im sticking to my z regardless - and im gonna watch that 'electric' Z thread very closely

the reason most people have old cars is that they cant afford brand new cars......and most new cars are crap anyway.........like were going to scrap our zeds for a 8 grand 1.3 litre car......its pathetic......i hardly know anyone who buys a brand new car,not even my dad does...who wants to pay 16 grand for a brand new mondeo, when you can get a 5 year old sporty honda s2000 or a rx8 for under 10 grand....its alright for them mp's with 6 houses each....they make me puke.......and that darling bloke,he needs a severe kick in the *****x......

can someone explain what this actually means?

and if inflation falls to -ve like it just has does that mean petrol will get cheaper ?

And our zed tax goes up (slightly) :slap:

Who will these changes affect?

The 13 new vehicle tax bands will only apply to cars registered on or after 1 March 2001. This is because there is no comprehensive emissions data available for cars registered before this date.

Rates for cars and vans registered before 1 March 2001 are based on engine size. The current rates for these cars, and the rates applying from 1 May 2009 and 1 April 2010, are included in the table below:

Who will these changes affect?

Engine size (cc) Not over 1549

Current rate - £120

2009-10 - £125

2010-11 - £125

Engine size (cc) Over 1549

Current Rate - £185

2009 -10 - £190

2010 - 11 - £205

It will never work......

......I mean if you are going to buy a brand new car; when the dealer has to give you £2k for a clapped out old Escort worth £150 against (say) a new Focus, you're not going to get much (or any) of a discount on the Focus are you?

In that case reckon you'd be better off scrapping the old Escort and negotiating a bigger discount off the Focus;)

Stupid short sighted Government. There are enough problems with the whole economy going down the crapper and all they are worried about are a few CO2 emissions:xxx:

Richard:(

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Our local Honda dealer had an offer on about a year ago not a million miles from this. They were offering £1500 for ANY car you traded in against one of their spankin new uns. All it meant was they could cut down on the profit if their cars lol. FANTASTIC if you had a car worth peanuts and wanted a new Honda - HOWEVER all you would really want to do was go in and kick their arses into just giving you the 1500 nicker off instead of trying to find a POS to trade in

I cant see how offering people who can only afford an old car the chance to get into a debt for a discounted new car will help the economy. What will help the economy is disposable income because then people will have actual money to spend. Plus how is buying a brand new German, Japanese, French etc car going to help the British economy?

the 2000 pounds scrap allowance was suposed to be on top of any negotiated discount or current offers .......*****x its just that most Mp,s have shares in major motor manufacturers and they need to bump up the price of the stocks and shares

however i will be going to buy a knacker and keep it on the drive T & Tested for a 13 months then buy my other half a cheap runabout with 2 grand off ...she can run into the ground

And our zed tax goes up (slightly)

Engine size (cc) Over 1549

Current Rate - £185

2009 -10 - £190

2010 - 11 - £205

Thanks for the info Athene , i did'nt watch it:cool:

 Agree with all of that:)

This is exactly what will happen, instead of being able to get a £2k discount you will get this government backed money for your old car, the dealer then gets £1k from the government to increase his profit even further, then we the working class will pay more tax to repay the government the £1k, remember anything the government give's away in incentives / bailouts is money we will have earnt in the first place and paid to them in taxes.

My understanding of this is that the government supplies the initial £1k and 'industry' is 'expected' to provide the second half. Once again this is a 'policy' that is misleading and incomplete. More spin ...

Agree with all that's been said.

It's a bit worrying though that a bunch of 'evil, CO2 polluting, big engined car drivers' can see all this but the overpaid tossers running the country can't!!

Stupid Idea, the kind of people buying a brand new car will have existing cars worth much more than £2k so wont be used for the scrapping scheme.

The only thing it will do it have people buy old ****ed up bangers off ebay for £20 and take it to the dealers to get the 2k off a new car.

That means that people who wish to buy new cars and don't have an "old banger" to exchange will not benefit from the scheme so they will have to fork out the full amount on a new car so it would be better just to buy one of someone who took advantage of the scheme and will still make a bit of a profit leaving the dealers to scratch their heads or give even more discount.
