May seem like a stupid question, but I want to be sure and understand fully. I have the engine fully striped ready to go off and have the work done by a engineering company. Just want to know if some of the things listed is a must to be done.

 

I apologise if they seem like stupid questions, but I'm trying to learn as much as possible and to do most of the work myself.

 

Skimmed block?

Clear castings flasings from block (that's a must)

Block bored/ honed (that's a must)

Crank balanced?

Knife edged crank?

Skim heads (guess that's a must)

 

Anything I've missed for the engine shop to do?

 

Does anyone know of any decent engineers near to me in the south east?

dont skim it unless its definately off the level even if it overheated it may not have actually warped.....get a very straight steel rule / edge and test the level first...IIRC you can only skim a block @twice so dont do it unless absolutly necessary

Back to basics I would recommend head skimed and valve seats recut along with the valves. If the engine is stripped then if the pistons are all ok and no damage due to ring problems then new rings are a must. Obviuosly if there is ring damage then new pistons are required as well as rings. The bores will require glaze busting in any event. Get the crankshaft measured and if within tolerance then a polish would be OK but otherwise get it reground to a relevant undersize, and new bearings. The same with the bores really, get them measured to assess the wear. The block should not require grinding.

if your willing to post your parts i work for a company who do all of this. all block work and grinding, polishing and balancing of cranks. the work at my place is second to none. and it should be as we build engines for drag racing cars. should be able to get a good price. let me know if your intrested. oh and im in doncaster

I am going to order new forged pistons, conrods etc. Valve seats will be recut.

I had my crank knife-edged. they made a complete hash of it and contributed to my engine failure.

 

Balancing is important i believe and also get all your new parts balanced pistons and rods etc.

 

Also worth thinking about is porting.

 

Skiming the block i think is a must also.

 

Also i recently found this one out. if you are fitting a metal gasket when the heads and block are skimmed they must be perfectly smooth for a perfect seal!!

 

Normaly head gaskets it isnt so important the finish is perfect.

 

I only know all this as Thor stripped my engine and this was one of the contributing factors to the failure. very expensive mistake!!

Right.. I had my engine rebuilt about a year ago, the finish to the heads wasnt brilliant and when the metal headgaskets were fitted it didnt perform a perfect seal. because they are metal there is no give in them as where the standared gaskets would of be fine with the finish of my heads and block as when bolted up the gaskget would squeeze and seal. One of the reasons my engine failured was done to a bad seal e.g. the surface on the block and heads wasnt good enough.

 

So i think the finish on both the heads and block need to be as smooth as a babys bum when using a metal head gaskget. so think the block would need to be skimmed. Maybe your block has a clean smooth finish to it?

 

I think my heads, lower plenum and upper plenum were all ported. also exhaust outlet on the block.

 

im not too sure how much its costs as a seperate item. the place doing the call is doing the lot until the final bill comes through im not sure on how much each job cost.
