Hi Guys

Just wanted some information and some help

Started the car up this morning and evrything was fine......drove for about 5 minutes to the nearest petrol station and filled her up.....came back and started her up and it seemed for a minute or two to smoke a little more then normal and i panicked and ran to the back and it cleared up but there was a slight hint of blue smoke from the exhaust.....iv had the pcv valves changed so it cant be that.......just wondering what it costs nowadays to get new turbos fitted

also what route to take and can it be done without taking the engine out......i dont mind spending money but im looking for reliability over huge power

Any help or information would be grateful

jef i am a professional . And its far easyer frm a diy point of veiw to remove the engine as you then have the space to work on the engine. but a pro can work in close spaces.

that s the reason i do threm on the car. so theres no other issues with anything else.

you do the trubo's and thats it.

Nothing else is disconnected so no other issues can arrise . so from a warranty point of veiw it makes better sense to me.

And you can replace just one turbo if you wish. as many people do due to cost issues.

Now if some one says i need turbo's .cam belt . water pump . pcv's . water etc etc. then of corse a different course of action will be required.

As for the time scale it takes a bout 6 hours a side.

The guy that was partners in hiteq when it started I knew him as we were both at nissan together.

Maybe its our nissan training . lol

P.S

At the end of the day its about choice and what option fits each job at hand.

But the point i was trying to make is there are options..

Just out of interest Daz, how much do you charge for labour for changing one or both turbos?

Dazkent

I take some of your points but in general you seem to of contradicted your own argument, you speak as a professional but seem to of not grasped the very essence of why when working on the 300zx TODAY requires much more than just speedy jobs, they need dedicated inspection with quality and efficiency anything less will be half jobs and give poor value.

Many owners on this forum have suffered at the hands of the “Johnny come lately specialists” who tried the exact same kind of operation you have spoken about, and to quote yourself...

Nothing else to do??? so no water pipe replacement? no wiring loom inspection, connections clean, no engine set up after ? no rear crank oil seals changed ? no egr removal ? all jobs done easily and efficiently with the engine out.

Rubber water pipes at the rear of the engine for instant can and do fail, changing these is like money in the bank, don't change them and later if one fails it can ruin an engine, in my mind if you swapped the turbo`s and did not deal with the hoses and they failed you would be at fault and be digging in your own pocket for a new engine.

Options?....... no compromise is what your talking about and that is NOT professional

Maybe its our nissan training . lol

Would keep that a secret if I was you

This is not a personal dig, far from it, clarity is all I am trying to achieve.

LOL....................ok people.......lets get back to the main topic.......

Yep ok.

i have to disagree Jeff.

just to make this clear mate im no “Johnny come lately specialists”

Find out who i am mate.

I dont diss agree with some of your comments.i think your missing the point i was making.

Replaceing the turbo's on the car isnt a quick fix by any means. its a long job which takes skill and confidence to do corectly.

if dueing these repairs any parts removed were found to be in poor condition then it would be ridiculas not to rectify them at that time. my previous statment didnt surgest in any way that i would recomend not being strinjent in the repair.

but Why woulld anyone inspect looms and replace rear main oil seal etc when they are not removed for the repair or even disconnected. and engine set up ?

As i said on my prev post if a vehicle requires many repairs then a repair stratagy needs to be made based on that basis.

There members on this forum who's turbos have been replace this way and are still going strong 10 years later.

would you still replace all the items you speak of if the customer to you had recently had those jobs done before ?

And surley customer buget should always be considered.

or were do garages stop? while its on the ramp you may as well over haul the whole car ? as its in the garage . no comprimise..

Im not saying your wrong jeff. so please dont consider me to be so either.

As for the training mate. i consider The manufacturer to be by far the best place to be trained on a product.

Topless. mark.

You know me mate. so i cant speak of costs etc.

but i would say 6 hours a side is the norm for on the car turbo replacement.baring any problems.

Less than two days labour is a bargain:bow:

Well Fas, you got a few ideas there to ponder mate :)

First port of call though is to be certain new turbo's are actaully required, as either way it's done, it's not a cheap job.

So get it assessed properly mate.

You've then got 2 options has to how you want to do it if it is the turbo's. No point in having 2 professionals battle it out as to which is best because at the end of the day if it comes down to the amount of hours for the labour cost, Daz's 6 hours a side and Jeff's total time, are very similar.

Good luck anyway's bud, keep us posted.

Oh an look forward to seeing your motor in the flesh again, i last seen it at JAE at Peterborough a couple years ago when we chatted ;)

Smithy

£400 to change one turbo in situ, amazing price Dazkent:shock:

That`s a wicked price! I expect that includeds a brand new turbo with 360deg bearing then.

Jeff

Fantastic option for people on a budget, who can only afford to replace one side at a time.
