Hi

I have purchased a cat-back delete kit including the new elbows.

In the process of removing the existing cats section I have sheared two bolts from the left three point hook up to the stock elbow. This even after much soaking/heat etc.

So my question is - based on my experience to date and the above - I am pretty sure the turbo elbow fittings (two studs and two nuts) will be [hell of] a LOT harder!!! :hurl:

I need to know that if I shear a stud/bolt on the actual elbows - will I be able to recover/drill out without removing the engine etc etc.

Your guidance as ever is appreciated. ;)

From memory if the worst happens there isn't enough room to drill them out. I ran with two bolts for that reason!

Thanks Anthony - out of interest which ones sheared - if you recall?

Was it the same ones on each side?

quick tip on removing the exhaust bolts get a 6 sided socket as the sockets that grip on the corners may round your bolt heads

Thanks Fastreds - will do.

So if I shear more than two bolts on any one side - it's basically engine out time?

Also, don't know if you used one, but a pneumatic/electric impact wrench with a 50p shaped socket, knocks it loose rather than brute fore and snapping things...

I sheered 2 of the 3 bolts when removing the cat pipes last year.

This year I have removed the actual turbo down pipes, although they were awkward they where no where near as tight as the cat pipe nuts/bolts.

Hi Paul,

And that's all done from UNDER the car right?

passengers side i removed the battery to access the top two bolts, and the top bolts for the driverside accessed from above. The 2 bottom nuts from under the car using a spanner.

Worst part for me was i had to remove the driverside downpipe heatshield as it stopped me getting a socket over one of the bolts.

Cheers Paul: Yeah me too - looks like someone has already rounded the 10MM bolts on the heat shield so I am gonna have to grind those off somehow  :nono:

And it look slike I am gonna need to buy a couple of very good 12 and 14mm ring spanners for those bottom baby's.

Can you get a socket on the top two - or is that spanner as well?

I used sockets on the top 2 bolts.

Well - I have the 4 nuts off from under the car (2 each side) and strangely they were very loose - as in finger tight on the drivers side and my 11 year old princess could have done the ones on the passenger side - WHATS GOING ON!!?

The drivers side in completely dry - no oil - but the passenger side has signs of some oil leakage and someone has tried to make good with exhaust gum or similar. This is on the other side of the turbo - NOT the elbow joint. I guess I should try and fix this while I am down here right - any ideas?

Gonna try the the remaining 4 nuts from the top tomorrow evening subject to weather etc.

Thanks for your help Paul & co - appreciated. Will post some pictures of the oily bits tomorrow for your comment.

Hmmmm

Five HOURS and 5 bolts so far!!!!!

I got the top one nearest the battery after about 30 mins - but the other ones all need a slightly longer 13mm socket that I don't have - will buy tomorrow.

I did manage to replace my centre bearing though - jeez it was knackered

Hi can someone show me / tell me which kinda 13mm socket they used to get the trop bolts outta the turbo elbows - I am having troubles to say the least! And I need to buy the right tool I feel :D

Any help appreciated - after 5 hours and 5 bolts -really want to crack on and get the last 3 blighters out.

Thanks. :duffer:

Thanks for the warm words that enthused me and kept me sane.

The key was (as usual) getting the right tools for the job. A (5cm) deep 13mm socket had the last two remaining bolts out in less than 30 mins :headvswal

So all in all a good 6 hours to get the four nuts and four bolts outta those pesky turbo's. But at least I had no issues with heads shearing or threads stripping thank god!

The JAPSPEED cat back delete kit I bought off ebay has turned out to be just a brilliant bit of kit - fitted fantastically and the welding is pure art - I can reccomend.

These are the Japspeed pipes I bought.

Some Pikkies...

If anybody needs pictures or description of the tools I used let me know - happy to help. :hyper:

Cheers
