Hi,

Gonna have a good bit of soldering to do in the car and although I've got a 30 watt soldering iron, it really struggles on any larger wires. After reading on the net it looks like the wires act like a heatsink so the iron doesn't have enough to melt the solder.

I looked at this soldering iron http://cpc.farnell.com/duratool/zd-931-89-3102/soldering-station-bs-plug/dp/SD0111906?_requestid=505273 which is a 48 watt one. WOuld it be any good?

Thanks

Vijay

i got a gas filled one works a treat, you can unscrew the end and use the heat for heatshrink.

gas filled is perfect for auto electrics on heavy gauge stuff and use pliers to hold the cable they will act as a heat sink and stop the insulation melting

do you mean the small hand held portable gas ones?

I got one.... sware by it, it's a draper one, not sure what te wattage is on it ut can find out.... I've done all my install and all the wiring repairs with it so far, gas is normal lighter gas and lasts about 20 mins.... a normal tin of gas lasts about 30 -40 refills

i got one of the draper ones as well but invested in a bigger one of ebay was about £20.

mine is the exact same as the one above, used it today works a treat.

Wish i could solder better than i do though because to be honest my skills suck

Also used the hot knife attachment to make some holes in the indicator housing to fix the kurb light holders. Very cool tool

and these small gas ones handle larger wires ok?

Hey Vijay

Yeh I too have the solderpro70 from Maplin. I bought some extra tips from rapidonline.com if I remember right. 4mm wide chisel tip was capable of letting me run solder onto the ends of the 4awg power cable, so it clamped nice and solid into a terminal block :O

Not even the 240 volt mains gun type soldering iron could do that I was shocked!

Cheers bud, that's exactly what I wanted to hear :)
