right finally got my old laptop fired up and working long enough to run datascan on my z. now i have found that the left o2 sensor wasn't giving any readings (stuck on lean aprox 26 on datascan)

now i cant tell how long its been running like that would the only symptom have been an increase in fuel consumption??

what else can a dodgy o2 sensor cause?

btw swapped it with another one i had and shebang she works a treat now both sensors sweeping.

O2 sensors tend to read out of range when they start to go. So if it was breaking down, you notice the figures being lazy rather than going zero. I'd try cleaning up the contacts first on any O2 sensor that was not responding at all.

What O2 sensors do is they read the amount of emissions on idle and up to a certain rev range to obtain a value for the air/fuel mix for the ECU. It then uses those values higher up the rev range. Most cars only use the real-time O2 readings on idle then use those value when the accelerator is depressed as the TPS will switch the ECU to run the circuit goes closed-loop. Figures have already been used and will be used via the ECU to base the fuel map on.

If one is faulty, as with most sensor failures/faults, the ECU will run default settings and in effect 'overfuel'. It's programmed to do this. Better to have a little too much fuel than not enough!

They don't effect the car that much, you may notice a difference in responsiveness, less MPG and more often than not, failed MOT emissions.

It effects different cars in different ways too. But generally the same symptoms

not only do you have a great Z........:dance:

but you also know s**t loads about them. :D:D

the vehicle is only in closed loop control under particular driving conditions which meet a closed loop condition.

Idle is one. light or constant throtle position driving is another.

Accel and decel are both open loop control conditions.

therefor you should be able to check the basic operation of your sensors when monitoring knowing this information.

please remember if you have a head ach. is the head ach the pain and the cause? or was it you had a bang on the head which caused the head ach. get me ?

o2 sensor are sensors not acuators remember they give back information about 02 levels within the exhaust gases. in closed loop the ecu listens to them in open loop they are ignored.

daz.
