I have heard the 300zx Manual is 300bhp? - the auto is 280bhp?.. why is this?.. what is so different, apart from the obvious transmissions..

Also, if someone gets a auto-manual conversion.. will it always be slower than the manual one?.. and is their a link on this site showing anything on auto-manual conversions..

Cheers!

The auto uses Different cams profiles and turbo sizes to improve response, in an attempt to make up for the Autobox.

Auto Camshafts - 240 degree intake cams & 248 degree exhaust cams

Manual Camshafts - 248 degree intake cams & 248 degree exhaust cams

Auto Turbos - A/R = 0.54

Manual Turbos - A/R = 0.63

In theory an auto-manual converted car would have quicker spool but less top end power than an original Manual car, but in reality there is not really anything in it. I cant say I've ever noticed the difference out of all those I've driven.

There are Loads of threads on Manual conversions, but just ask if you cant find what you need or have any specific questions.

p.s 300 and 280 is the quoted figures for the U.S Market. For the European Market the figures are 276 bhp for Manual and 263 for Auto. But thats a whole other discussion lol

cheers for info guys! - one more thing... what are the power ratings for the jdm market since you mentioned usdm & edm!

I'm pretty sure that they all have the same specs, The JDM was limited to a top speed of 112ish.

The 276bhp rating was to keep in line with an agreement between Japanese manufacturers to not produce a car with more than 276bhp. To get round this they simple said the car was rated at 276bhp! That's why all JDM's from that era had 276bhp.

To give an idea on JDM's, my 1995 ran 309.8fwhp and 301ft/lbs with nothing more than a cat back exhaust

One final but not inconsiderate point to remember is that not a single Z32 (in completely stock form) will ever produce the quoted bhp and torque figures as quoted when new from the factory. After many years of use (and abuse) it will have lost a considerable amount of power and torque. So therefore if you swap your NA over to TT and change from a auto to manual conversion you will still not make the magical 276/300bhp. It all depends on the condition of ALL the engine and transmission components.
