Hi,

I know that the forum is inundated with autobox faults and problems at the minute - but i havent found anything like mine (or i have missed it). It is a 1991 tt import - the box has always been ok upto aabout 5 months ago when it started to slip a bit 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd - this was only when opening it up. I changed the oil - cleaned the filter and all seemed a bit better - there were no sign of debris or anything in the auto box sump. It now will not engage 3rd when i drive normally - if i put my foot down it will go right upto 6,500rpm and then change and then it will drive ok even at lower speeds - this is until i stop and restart and the cycle continues. I wandered if it could be electrical or whether to change the oil again to see if that helps

any advice would be greatly appreciated

I've just had similar faults with mine, and from what I have read, they all describe the same symptoms, where it doesnt matter which gears it is that are affected, eventually, you lose drive and it slips and goes into neutral and then can sometimes jerk back into gear.. but I haven't been able to find out what the root cause is..

it could be the oil pressure is bad due to a clogged filter - the filter could be clogged with dirt?.. or debris from a gearbox which is on it's way out..

when you turn the car off, the pressure drops and you will be able to drive a while until this builds back up. - in the case of mine, i could drive about 200 metres then it was back to just revving again..

eventually with mine, it was under warranty so i send it back to the dealers, they 'fixed' it... I got told they put a new box in apparently...

I got it back 10 days ago.. and yesterday the thing just fried on me, could smell burning oil and then some crunching noises and then it just Broken completely..

so needless to say it's going back again... but my advise is to get it looked at staright away from an auto speciailist, get them to clean it out completely!!

Sump, filter, torque converter, oil cooler lines EVERYTHING .. I also read somewhere that apparently auto gearbox oil and filters need to be changed Every 12,000 miles on 300zx..

I'm starting to think that the next best option after all this hassle with the auto's.. is to get a auto - manual conversion..

We need to find out the reason why this happens with the autos though.. there is still no definate answer..

The TPS ( throttle position sensor) if slightly out will effect gear change.

When you drive, take you foot off the accelerator slightly like you would change gear in a manual and it will probably change up, if so then its likely the TPS is out slightly, but will be easier to tell if you can get it on consult ( diagnostics) I find that it gets better as it warms up , so you may have a slight blockage, somewhere.

JeffTT will have come across this many times and will probably have a definitive answer.

Cheers

right after actually reading this it would appear youu have some debri stuck in your box. try changing the oil again and fit a new filter but if it doesnt work get it put on a computer and solenoids checked !

Thanks Graham,

To be honest, only running it 5 miles a day it wont even start to get the oil warm in the box, with that in mind it is likely as paul mentioned that you may have a blockage or debris.

Try giving the car a longer run out at the weekend to get it all warmed up properly and see if you notice a difference.

thanks guys thats a great help - will take for a run and then if still bad drop the oil and change filter - many thanks paul for the input - bearing in mind i am in "isolated devon" - where is best to have solenoids checked if need be - is that a service you can do

kind regards
