Has anyone (or has this already been posted) heard about the revision that was brought in to the MOT test this year?

 

Basically says that if you exhaust(s) is louder than standard it is a fail.

 

The official wording is "We have made a slight amendment to the RfR, which now makes it clear that the comparison is with a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition"

it's not the mot that's changed, just the guidance notes - the key word is 'comparison'; it doesnt say anywhere that if the exhaust is louder you will fail.

"assess subjectively the effectiveness of the silencer in reducing exhaust noise to a level considered to be average for the vehicle... in comparison to a similar vehicle with a standard silencer in average condition"

 

Given that you're almost never going to have 2 300zx's next to each other (let alone one with a standard exhaust!) it's completely hypothetical, and is probably only going to be used on small engined cars with big exhausts... cos they sound rubbish! ;)

yep - good thing too!

As stated there isnt any real change to the failure criteria, just clarifys things for the tester. So it all depends on whether your exhaust is really noisy, or If the tester lives close to you and you wake him up every other night :rolleyes:.

 

On a similar note more and more police forces and local councils are getting their hands on sound meters. They are attempting to reduce the complaints they receive regards boy racers and noisy exhausts, so anyone with a loudish exhaust may end up being checked as well.
