Hi guys,

This wouldn't normally be a problem but I'm 200 miles from home doing some exams and my lights appear to have packed in. I can still get high beam but no tail lights (brake lights still work tho) and no low beam. I have to assume it's this fkn weather, it was well covered in snow last night and badly iced up this morning, presumably a short somewhere. I only have limited tools with me and very little time to spare at present, I'm not looking forward to a drive home with only high beam in this weather!

Just wondered if anyone has had the same problem and whether there is a known prob/easy fix...

Tia!

Do your high beams turn on when you turn your lights on instead of the normal lights??

If so sounds like a fuse.. drives side foot well.....

dont think both relays could have gone at the same time... or the switch could be knackered....

Agree as you look at the fuse box it is top row 3rd from the left, side light feed, also feeds the relays for the low beam.

Thanks guys, I'll check it out tomorrow. Typical - I can take out and replce the engine, gearbox etc but don't have a clue when a fuse blows ;-)

Cheers guys, 3rd fuse sorted it. Must have shorted somewhere with all the snow!

Hmm..me again, I bunged a 15A fuse in as it's all I had to hand at the time, it worked ok for a couple of hundred miles but even that blew. I've gone through a pack of 10A fuses now trying to make it work. Thought I might have found the prob with a stray wire behind the lights but apparently not.

The relay made a bit of a buzz at one attempt so I swapped it with the ASCD one, no different.

Anyone had this problem and identified it? Any common point of failure for the low beam circuit? I'm grasping at straws a bit, don't fancy chasing all the wires involved back to source :-(. I forsee myself being well and truly ripped off by an auto electrician in the near future :-(

Cheers

Most common in the side light circuit is the side light bulbs / holders at the front, also the side light circuit that runs behind the dashboard for illumination to the switches radio etc, etc.

Note: Be careful with fuse ratings in the future, higher blow rated fuses puts the wiring at danger of overheating and a real danger of fire, find the fault.

Ok Dad rant over

Thanks Jeff. Yeah I know about fuse ratings, it was simply that I was stuck in the middle of nowhere in the snow with limited spares.

Hmm, thinking about it, the fuse does blow when the sidelights are turned on so I guess that maybe narrows it down slightly. The wiring was a bit of a bad job by a previous owner I think, I didn't realise how bodged it was until I took the FF off!

Cheers
