I fitted Alpine speakers in my doors when all the interior came out, but never felt there was enough definition there. I have just bought a custom sub box for a 12" sub to go in the rear, I've replaced the rear speakers with Alpine speakers also.

But, do I got for component speakers in the front? The Alpine speakers I am currently looking at appear to be the same as the ones I already have fitted, but obviously with the tweeter which I don't have.

So, is it worth replacing these? Or will I not notice much of a difference?

Simon you can put some soft dome tweeters higher up the doors by the mirrors. this will rise the sound deck up the car. High frequency is directional and is fireing right in to your legs and getting lost. So bring the high end up the sound deck and you will hear the difference.

What happend to the sub enclosure you had off me to fit the SWB do you still have it intact?

Yeah I still have it. I figured it would be too much work to modify to fit. I now need a 12" sub as the 10" one is too small.

I also prefer the flush fit tweeters ones over those and would take a compromise too.

So, you can fit tweeters to existing speakers? I am a completely audio noob and I don't know how tweeters work. How do they take trebble away from the main cone?

The treble will still come from the full range 6" you have in the door adding the extra high end driver just lifts the HF up the sound deck so you can hear it better. Bass is omnipresent so it spreads around thats why you onlu here the bass when the house down the road has a party. This is due to the long wave length. HF is a very short wave length so it dose not travel well and is also directional. Hence on large sound systemd you have a horn shape to disperce it in the right directions and to accousticaly amplifie it. So if you lift the hf up the sound deck near to where you here it, it will make the definition better.

I hope this makes sence?

Erm, kinda. I really do know very little in terms of sound engineering.

Trying to squeez 25 years of sound engineering in to 10mins is hard work without being face to face!!

Got to be totaly frank, car audio isnt really my think as there is too much going on in the car, ie flex, vibration, noise etc my thing is really large PA and night club systems. I ran a small pa company for many years and manufactured systems incorporateing ATC, RCF, JBL, Gausse, EV, and Emmence drivers. So I come from a slightly larger background but its all transferable basics.

Allan, one question, will I need an amp for these? My head unit delivers 4 x 50, so if I select a component set with an RMS around 45 - 50 watts, should this be ok?

No these are add on so you wont need an amp, just piggyback them off the existing door speakers, they will come with a crossover to stop low frequencys getting in to them.

I never got as big as this, not for the want of trying just never had the dosh!

Can I mount the cross-overs in the door frame. I find the things ugly and want them hidden away.

I was able to fit the crossover in behind the air vent piping( if that makes sense?), out of the way and kept in place:)

Si,

You'll need to be careful with a sub box that large, as you'll not be able to draw your tailgate blind. That was the issue I had when I first installed a box in the tailgate. I ended up with a custom built sub area, to enable me to still close the blind.

I have my front door speaker crossovers inside the door panels, they fit no problem. Not sure if you can see from any of my rides photos, but I have fitted my tweeters directly opposite to the the door mirrors. I know you don't like stick on parts but they don't look too offensive. You can always get them flushed in to the top of the door pad (IIRC Apache has his flushed into his door cards).

As for front door amp; It really depends what your budget is TBH mate. The speakers will be a million times better with separate amplification. The head unit is rated as 4 x 50watts but you'll not be getting any where near that. They are always war over rated.

Have you already bought your rear speakers?

If you haven't, you'd be better off not fitting rear speakers and using the money to get the best upgrade you can for the front. When using components in the front and a sub in the back, you don't really need rear speakers.

I would also recommend you visit a good local in car hi-fi specialist. You don't have to commit to buying from them but they can give you a lot of technical knowledge and advice. They will definitely tell you to bin the rear speakers.

The higher the frequency the more directional it is. So tweeters need to be pointed at you whereas Subs can go in the boot.

You could get yourself some seperate Tweeter and crossovers and connect them up to your existings front speakers, then only direct mid-tone ranges to your fronts and the highs to the tweeters. They may take some extra adjustment to get them to sound right as they wont be matched, so the tweeters could be under/overpowered for the mids.

Or you could replace them with a complete set of components to ensure a simple match.

I have flush mounted tweeters in mine with the crossovers hidden behind the door panel - loads of room.

As you know Si I have just done a pretty big install in mine with focal components in the front, 8" JL subs in the back and 6x9 Focals in the rear also. In fairness the 6x9s aren't really needed and are a bit of overkill but thats another story.

What I was going to say is I only live over the bridge so if you wanted to meet up somewhere you could take a look at how ive done it. My tweeters are flush mounted and the mids are behind the door panel so all pretty discreet. I have mounted the xovers out of site but under the dash as they are adjustable and I may want to get to them without having to remove the door panel. I do have a write up and photos on it if you want

I've fitted new speakers all round, so will leave the rears in. Might get some decent Alpine fronts with crossovers.

I have got a custom contoured sub from Speedfreak to fit the sub and amp into. :)
