You will get more focus for your money thats for sure the golf is overpriced for what it is, a quick search and I think you'll struggle to get a nice mk4 for 1500, the Focus is regarded as the better car in general motoring circles mainly that it represents better valule for money, cheaper running costs and an alround better package.

The Mk4 Golf is as bland as a cupcake and the first Focus, whilst being a decent car has oddball looks and a minging dash. I've driven both and they are both competant cars though. I know you don't like Vauxhalls, but I'd rather have a MK4 Astra over either. As a first car though, I'd be tempted to go for something that's cheaper to insure and more reliable like a Mazda 323. No more bland than the Golf or, but amazing reliability, cheaper insurance and generally a better spec.

The MK2 323F is dirt cheap now. I've always kinda liked this shape. Better looking than the Golf or Focus.

cheers beer monster

si paul, i didnt ask for what you had or what you would get, please keep o topic as ive made up my mind and dont want to change it again lol, its her first car and it needs to be big enough for the dog

OH o.k LOL focus are cheaper to get and maintain

£1500 won't buy a MK4 worth owning, its Mk3 money realistically which is a dire car imo, where as £1500 gets you plenty of choice in the Focus so out of the choice its the better option.

the wife has had a focus for a few years now without many problems. one thing i will say deffo look out for if you consider it allan, check under the passenger side carpet as they are prone to leaks through the pollen filter. its a common fault which ford know about. however there is an upgrade available to stop it. other than that i cant fault it.

Old shape Focus vs Mk4 Golf - I would take the Focus. More entertaining to drive, and you'll get a better spec/conditon/mileage car car for the money, compared to the Golf. Focus was voted Car of the year by many when launched, including Top gear.

(New Shape Focus vs Mk5 Golf - I would take the Golf)

cheers guys, think im gonna pay the extra insurance and get a 1.6 focus, ive just missed one at the car sales that went for just under 1k with decent milaege and a bit of tax and test

would ike a golf, but i would have to up my budget to geta decent one and im not prepared to do that

get her a fooking push bike she'll only crash the car an say it wasn't her fault

Get yourself down the car auctions, i was there tonight (haven't been for years) and there was a VW Eos 2006 (hardtop convertible) 17000 warranted miles went for £4050. I couldn't believe the prices, i must be honest as i hadn't heard of an Eos and just looked it up when i got home.

just missed a focus, 2001 1.6 lx, red, leccy windows, aircon, lowish milaege some tax and test went for 950ish after tax, thats a decent piece of car for the price, just got insurance quote and it came in at £788 for the wench and three named drivers

not bad quote for a 1.6 first car

im asking advice on what car to get, please keep the bickering to yourselves

thanks

Allan

sorry allan, but this gets my back up.

johnny. you havent caused any upset to me. but you insinuated that i have to repair twice, which i WILL take offence of. and talking about the aspect of a broad range, when youve worked for dealers such as LEXUS,/TOYOTA, FORD, FIAT, RENAULT, VW, FERRARI, PORSCHE, JAGUAR, SAAB, ect, plus anything from a mini, up to some very very expensive rare ferraris, then i think the chance of coming across any mechanical or electrical problem is far greater, with over 30yrs experience, 20 of them on the electrical side gives you a very very wide range of what vehicles have which common problems.

so allan. stick with the focus mate.

There must have been something very very wrong with it.

focus it is paul, seems to be best value for money, still like te golf though

yeah. dont get me wrong, i too like the golf, mainly the 1.9tdi. but from a purchase/running costs point of view, and price of parts ect, it has to be focus. just bide your time and try getting one with service history.
