nightmare! big ends probably gone on me zed-seriously gutted

well i went to rockingham today, was having a great time until we drove into the pit lane and heard seriously loud banging noises from under the bonnet frown.gif. had to get towed back to hull. looks like after spending 6.5k on my top end, the bottom end has now given up, at least it seems that way. christ knows how much it will cost this time, i could have bought a new car with the money i am spending on this 10 year old car. pissed off to say the least.

Personaly Steve i would keep the zed,get the engine well sorted,reason being what the hell can one get out there for the money!sod all exciting/different/big fun factor/driving with a big grin(or not if somethin happens), i mean all the cars out there are now looking all the same,there boring, stayed,uninteresting,like a load of lemings with no indeviduallity,so,in a word,if you love it,keep it,enjoy.

As well as the oil pump -

 

I can't recall if the sump is baffled on the Z, I don't think it is - see if you can get one made up by someone reputable (I'm sure they'd sell more than just yours, too), or if you really want long track sessions, as Ay3888 says, a dry sump kit.

 

The Z also has a tendency to suck raw oil through the PCV's under heavy cornering (as well as suffering oil starvation if the cornering forces are very high), so it's worth keeping a very close eye on your oil when on track, or thinking about trying to rig up an oil seperator system inline in the PCV's (it's been debated before, it's just not easy).

But could be more owing to if you hadnt checked oil between sessions.

Actually, I used to think that the volume of oil in the Z was low for such a highly stressed engine. Apart from anything else, the more oil there is, the less cr@ppy particles per litre there are in the oil at any one time. My TVR used to take twice as much oil as a Z which was more expensive but more confience inspiring.

 

No idea on what sort of baffling there is but Nico or Duff may well know.

 

I've never heard of this problem occuring through oil starvation at the pump but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I think a fair few Zs were raced a lot in the states and Japan. Does anyone know if they were dry sumped ?

Hang in there mate, I am just about to fit my 5th engine since July. Fun!!!!All bottom end problems!!!

The sump has plenty of baffles in it - which makes it an **** to clean actually. However, the sump is a little too small in variuos peoples opinions, make sure you're filled up to the maximum marker on the dip stick before hitting the track.

 

There are also plenty of other baffles and oil traps in the cam covers to stop too much oil being reburnt through the crank ventilation system, but is still a little insufficient for serious track use - when a catch tank would be advised.

gee man, now thats what i call hanging in there!!! 5 engines, you put jaylox to shame!!

 

still thinking about what to do, but presently sorting out buying a house, so cash will be short for a while.

 

also seems that bottom end rebiuld is the best solution, but i dont know about how much confidence i will have in the car now.
