what shall i do? buy another zed or get a brand new engine in me zed?

i have been thinking hard about what to do after my bottom end blew last weekend. I am condsidering buying andyD's zed, as it has a new engine, its a series II, manual, and black just like mine. i could then use my zed for spares and claw some cash back by breaking my old zed.

Alternatively, i could just get a brand new engine from nissan, and use all the new hoses and other new parts i have bought for my last engine and install the whole shabang in my zed.

what do you guys think?

regards

steve

Do NOT, whatever you do, buy a NEW engine! The money it would cost would be same as what you'd spend on a complete rebuild of your knackered one, WITH all the required extras and modifications to get 600 / 700 bhp - safely.

A new engine from Nissan will be £10K on the dot - and thats one which will probably need a rebuild anyway - because its been sat in a warehouse for 10 years.

Just my thoughts.

just my thoughts.

I was offered a brand spanking new engine from Arriva Nelson in Peterborough for 4.5K.

Nico paid 7K I think a few years earlier.

NOT 10K Si!!! wink.gif

I just phoned Sterling Nissan in Ipswich out of pure curiosity - 10K includes turbos and being in one piece - its cheaper to buy the block, heads etc separately.

I dunno how they get away with it to be honest. Being allowed to quote different prices for the same parts at different dealers. Fcuking joke! ...on us! mad.gif

i was quoted 4.5 k from Nissan Plus shipping ect. And it would not have been sitting there for 10 years as they were producing them up until last year.

Work out how much time you have?

Work out how much money you have?

Work out if you enjoy your Z enough to warrant the expense?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO just fix the engine you have - you will end up with a far better package in the end!!! If you don't, can I HAVE your old one? LOL

CheerZ,

Andy

Looking back on it now I wish I had gone for the brand new engine.

Think about it. 0 miles!

Provided everything goes back with new hoses and piping etc. you should have trouble free motoring(engine wise) for the rest of your Z days. Provided you don't mod too heavily I suppose.

Decent oil and frequent changes to boot!

IMO

brand new engine from nissan is 5683 inc VAT.

i have all new hoes on my zed at present and new rad and an ever increasing list or items.

also the engine from nissan is guaranteed for 12 months, so any problems and it goes back!

i already have new turbos.

have to think about this a bit more, gee man its a expensive game this zed.

No No, like i said in one of your other threads on this subject, have your problem diagnosed 100% first and look to rebuild that fault.

smthy

On A serious note Steve,I go with Smithy on this.

Ok, you've done the research on a new engine. Now do some research on replacing your internals with uprated parts wink.gif Whats that? It's a lot cheaper? Oh what a surprise wink.gif lol

Seriously, find out what is wrong with your existing engine first. The sump on the zed is baffled just as an answer to a number of previous questions. I am not so sure your engine blew due to oil starvation caused by pickup problems. It could well be the oil pump was damaged in the past with the sludge.

You do need to really think on this one. Who will be doing the work for you? One job is certain - the engine that is in your car has to come out so maybe do that first. Once its out pull the sump off and inspect that bottom end - it shouldn't take too long to see whats up in there wink.gif

HTH

CheerZ,

Andy

yup, go for rebuild

the crank may even be able to have the journals resurfaced, saving a considerable amount. I know of a very good engineering company that we use if thats any help (in kent), new big end & mains shells wont break the bank. along with a new oil pump & you could be back up & running as long as the pistons havnt picked up in the bores.

I feel the need, the need for speed!

i have to say, get the problem diagnosed, but if you are looking at a full rebuild, then id rather go for a new engine if you can afford that route.

How many times ive been burnt going down the rebuild route is now not funny.

And the money ive spent on rebuilds id much rather have got a brand new engine with warrentee and all and used the difference to do other things with the car.

If there was a single engineering company in this country that could actually do a decent job, then it would not be a bad idea.

just my 2 pounds worth lol

I agree with Warren.

5683 inclusive for a brand new engine? FFS! I paid 850 squid to get my lump pulled by Arriva Nissan to tell me my engine was Phuket.

My bill at SE was 2300 squids for just head work basically! Ported heads and a small fortune of that money included the wiring loom and new(supposed) rad.

Yeah get the internals done if you like but I don't know of many brand new uprated sets of pistons that go for a song does anyone else?

Also if you go for oversized pistons you'll be needing a rebore if I'm not mistaken.

Ask Latz how much he is spending on maxing his Zed engine up and I think 5K looks like a bloody good deal to me for piece of mind.

Most people I know who have had their internals done don't come up short of lashing out 10K if you wanna do it properly!

Depends what you want I suppose but personally if it was me I would want a reliable car with no more than 350-400 bhp to make me happy!

Zeds cost far too much money to squeeze that big 600 bhp out of IMHO it's a waste of money! wink.gif

Courtesy Nissan for a new engine is $3000 I think plus shipping and import tax? Secondhand engine is £750-£1500 depending on condition. Labour is going to be around £1000 to swap engine. Not going to make a suggestion or recommendation as others know the techie stuff much better than me, but I went for a secondhand and younger engine cos I was lucky to be offered it.

this is a landmark post lmao, thats possible the most sense youve ever made biggrin.gif

Anyone who starts runnign near the 600mark (and lets face it how many are there) will start having to invest serious money into the car, in which case you would not mind starting with a brand new lump as 5k is the least of your worries.
