Does anyone, that may have done a rear light conversion have any photos of their lights disassembled?

Thanks.

A word of advice, ignore all that put them in the oven rubbish and just use your ladies hair dryer, its easier, faster and you wont melt the lights

Just what I wanted. Top pic especially. Just giving me some ideas for my SMD LEDs. :)

How much space is there under the lens with the defuser fitted? IE, does the defuser sit right on the support endes of the base?

Thought it was something to do with the (smd led's) idea:)

i find the idea very interesting !! after reading ur prev post on it.

i've also still got my old cracked light u can have for free if that helps for further invstigation?

no probs gotta go to the post office tomorrow anyway so i'll get postage price for that also should'nt be much

i'll pm you;)

Si i have one at work in my office i am converting as a trial to LED , i have just looked at it and there is is a good 8mm clearance at the tightest point between the diffuser and the "base" of the light ....when they are finished i will post up pics , unfortunatley not on the car asits been gone nearly 8 months now for the engine rebuild and is still no further forward than the day i took it down ...

Thanks mate. Interesting. That is at its deepest point though right? What sort of clearance is there around the curved edges of the corners? Is there still that sort of spare between defuser and backing?

On that basis, there should be plenty of room for a regular sized PCB thickness of around 1.6mm and then some to spare for the SMD LEDs and possibly even a heat sync.

I need to try and locate a manufacturer who may be able to supply either a mirror or chrome type translucent film that I can put betweenED and defuser to keep the original look.

Simon the space betwen the diffuser and the origional lamp holder assemblies is easily big enough to get two or three rows of 10mm SM leds in and two rows either side of 5 mm leds , the only place its not worth doing is where the standard reflector sits ,

the indicator ( orange LEDS's ) need the balast resistor dont forget that, as far as silvering goes you can buy from any kiddies car mag ..revs etc etc ( god forbid )

window tinting film in chrome or silver it will let the led light through but dont know how much it will dim the effect .....it would be worth making a board with holes in and silver that and slip it over the leds once mounted which is well away from any diode legs and therfore the silvering or chroming will not cause electrical shorts and will keep the factory look from outside the car and look very trick when lit up !

If I use SMD LEDs with a membrane or resin on top then a translucent film on top again, there shouldn't be issue with any shorting?

I can select 2 of the brightest LED outputs for this purpose. The only issue then is heat. High power LEDs can product it if there are many of them sat close together.

Regarding the reflector, on stock rear lights, some light does get through them, so I'd want 1 complete PCB on the top section with a key cut in it so that the screw from the base and support will slot around it...if you catch my meaning.
