Running Two Turbos through a single exit Exhaust ???

How technical are you experts in the house???

I am thinking of running two downpies from my Turbos into a single pipe and then running that along through the car to exit at the rear.

I am wondering how it would effect the Turbos, if at all, with one down pipe being much longer than the other and going over the bellhousing and meeting the second down pipe on the other side.

Can anyone see any issues with back pressures from the Turbos if these pipes meet closer to one Turbo than the other?? That is, would the higher pressure from the shorted length pipe blow back up into the longer pipe??

Does that make sense at all ???

Cheers

Maybe better if you look at this first...

This is just a rough mock up of tubes at present and by no means the final design. But see the right hand downpipe going over to the left, this would then join with a form of Y piece at the left side downpipe. From there it can run through the car as a single tube.

I know with good old fasioned exhausts (not upto speed with fancy new stuff, but getting there!) that its best to have all extractor pipes of an equal length. Is this the same case with Turbo downpipes???

Might just have a full change of mind and go for two side exit exhausts.. More fun for the flames!!

Any thoughts??

I've got a two into one pipe and its perfectly fine....... a bit loud though lol.

Are the down pipes different lengths? I dont suppose you have a picture to post do you please?

Cheers...

just remember that an exhaust is tuned by length and diameter..mess this around too much and you could lose top end or even torque..my advise is to call powerflow or other exhausts manufacturer.....

The only problem I see doing that in a Z32 is the lack of space in that particular area.

You can just about get a hand above the gearbox and below the shell......

No pic sorry but they're the same length up to the middle of the car then go into one pipe, not as soon as your on about.

Why dont you just buy a single exit system like a hks superdragger and take out all the guess work out of it

I would buy one but its all the wrong shape for the car. I also dont really want anything to be under the floor as its currently just flat sheet steel from front to back. I have looked at buying just the downpipes from a manufacture company and then going from there. But I dont really want to go down the drivers side of the car at all, if I can help it.

I have had an exhaust manifold made by Tubetorque in the past, good sugestion to ring the experts!

Z32 space does not aply in my case, luckily!

Mines the superdragger.... bit noisy though. I like noisy!

I will probably just *******ise something from bought downpipes and home made system, save the welding hassle and worry that the back pressures may be to pot.

I never gave this a thought until just now, only ever had one turbo before... doh!

To answer your original question then.....

All single exit pipes join after the cats, this is because there is no space to join then up before that area.

I think you'd be ok joining the pipes up by the turbos, a turbo exhaust system is not a very critical thing compared to a highly tuned N/A engine.

Rob, the body is all steel mate. It was chopped off an anglia chaisis and welded onto the homemade space frame. Its aproject I just took over by the way, been a labour of love for many years!

I also have a YB Turbo Anglia thats on the road, that is mad enough. This one will be mental !!!

Cheers for the word on the non critical turbo exhaust. You may guess from my words that I am more of an old school N/A sort of chap myself. All this elecronics stuff is beyond me, but its pretty basic when you strip it right down to basics.

How about tube diameter for the main system then? Also would it be fine with only small silencers? My Anglia Cosworth Turbo lump has a 2.5" tube with mid box straight through silencer and that runs just fine. I also run a Mk2 Escort with Yb Turbo and that has two small silencers on the 2.5" tube, also fine for the job. Should then be sweet for a relatively smaller twin turbo set up then? How do these ZX motors like to breathe?

I am going to enjoy this project I reckon!

Cheers...

LOL sounds like a cool project mate!

The biggest restiction on a turbo Z exhaust system is the cast manifold. For the power you're chasing it might be advisable to buy some mike smith manifolds (or copies;)) and go from there.

I would think 2.5" downpipes would be fine, just remember to make the single pipe 3" or 3.5" diameter. As for silencers, again they're not critical. Just make sure they're straight through design not composite baffle and you'll be ok.

Reading your last post again, are you going for single or twin turbo?

a few years ago I was with a friend in his car on a motorway somewhere near Norwich. We were doing about 100mph (he was driving, I take no responsibility) when this Ford Anglia overtook us (slowly). I noticed a cosworth sticker on the back of it just before he put his foot down and it just disappeared in a cloud of blue smoke (and that was from 100mph)!

You don't think that could have been you, do you blgdave?

Phil, not been to Norwich in ages mate. Also no blue smoke out of the back of mine fella. But it does make a few peopel look in horror as I fly away from them. I had a play three weeks ago with two suited hoo-rahs in a 08 plate BMW, what a laugh to leave them in their £40K car in a 43 year old Noddy car made up in a garage!!

Did it look like this at all...

th_06122008005.jpg

Wheel spin in 3rd on the rollers, still makes me laugh!!

Dunk, going twin turbo mate. Also as little silencer as possible! I will just make new down pipes by the way, not sure yet what the connector is like but should be easy enough to buy the right type and size? Probably go for 3" right through also??

Cheers...

Sorry if I went off topic, how strict are we in here???

  • Author

Nah. Its a laugh! best thing is the red one does not even have a lsd fitted. You are just along for the ride, the car is in control. Still a right laugh tho! Its what its all about fella. Shiney stuff and polishing are for parking in a field. Cars are for driving!!

Mind you, I am talking she-ite here. I have had this project on the go for 7 years now...

I am really drifting off topic now, sorry mods! ;)

Haha that's hilarious! Melting the tyres on the dyno..... class!

3" should be fine, assuming you're going for larger turbos (for 500hp) then it will be perfect.

Oh, and with a project as cool as this, feel free to drift off topic as much as you like :D :duffer:
