My steering wheel is off centre when driving straight. The car doesn't pull to the left or right, so is it just a case of taking the steering wheel off and recentering it?

If the steering was taken off and moved in the past then yes you can take it off and put it back, if it has slowly goten worse or the track arm has been bent then no it will either need re tracking or a new arm and tracking.

It's just had a steering rack end and front shocks replaced to get through an MOT. Would a bent tracking arm show up on an mot?

Ah if its just had a new rack then its probably just tracking. Yes they would spot a bent arm no doubt.

Get the tracking sorted, then (if necessary) re-centre the steering wheel by taking it off and reinstalling it. Then, reset the ECU by disconnecting the - terminal for an hour or so. Reason for this is that your HICAS will have been disconnected due to the off-centre steering wheel. The HICAS ECU will automatically switch it self off when it realises that you are constantly "steering" at an angle even when going straight forward.

Dan,

out of interest.

in the scenario you describe, wouldn´t the HICAS warning light come on ? ..i.e if the steering wheel is just slightly off could you get away with the HICAS ECU not not automatically switching the HICAS off. reason I ask is that my aftermarket steering wheel is just slightly off centre but I´m sure my HICAS is still working.
