Was watching re-runs of The Garage on sky and the narrator said that 90's automatic gearboxes were really bad on fuel compared to the manual version. He was talking about a golf but I was wondering if the zed suffers from this as well?

Featured Replies

Automatic cars will use slightly more fuel as the cars engine is always under load turning the torque converter but it is negligible.

That's what I thought, but this bloke was saying that a lot of people converted their cars to manual just because of the fuel saving! He did say that modern auto boxes are far better on fuel use.

mines was a auto when i bought it and had it converted to manual and it does make a difference.:hyper:

Not sure about the economy of a 300zx but in the case of "ordinary" cars with smaller engines; the auto version is slower, less efficient and has higher emissions than the equivalent manual. Even with new cars........

With more powerful cars like the 300zx, the difference is not so great. And with bigger engined Mercs (eg my SLK350) the auto versions are actually faster, more efficient and have lower emissions than the manuals!!

Richard;)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I dont know enough about new car technlogy in regards to modern cars, but in general autoboxes are less efficient than Manuals, creating more drivetrain friction and power losses which would all equate to more fuel usage.
