as some of you know i got my finger out and finished my ipod holder, as it sits the now you push one end in so you can get it out from the other but what im thinking is getting on old electric wing mirror and a set of the switchs for it, strip the old mirror down and remove the motor from it that makes it fold in and use this to move a plate under the ipod so that it pushes it up for me, to control it id take the switch out of the controls that would normally fold the mirrors in fit it into the spare space on my existing controls like in the pic below thus being able to press it to lift it up ect. what do you think worth it? will it work? or just leave it lol

great idea, but unfortunately the switch block is a sealed unit, although its moulded, i suppose you could hack one apart to try to modify it.

Good luck with it and a great use for an ashtray that will probably never be used as such, i use mine as a drink holder when on the motorway.

Nice idea, mine currently floats around the glove box :wack:

How the hell do you fit a drink in the ashtray? mines seems tiny, it wouldn't take a can!

It's a sepcial design that fits in the ashtray and has a drink holder above it.

I take the ashtray out and use it to hold can of coke or cuppa, whatever really, you can even fit an extra large milkshake from mcdonalds in there...

If you got a electric mirror unit, unsolder the plug inputs and push out three hollow shafts the top cover which holds down the two motors/gear box, cut the cover in two and trim unwanted off, now remove one of the white toothed rack with a small ball joint on the end, drill a small hole in the end for a rod/wire about 1mm, now place the motor/gear box and toothed rack together and a bit of tap the holed, now you have a small actuator, or you could use a boot release from a Ford fiesta which are one way movement with a spring return sum are up down and sum push up depending on year.

I hope this would give you some idea on a low cost approach …!

yeah i bought a lead from ebay it has a usb for charging and the phono leads for sound then bought an incar usb charger

There are charging differences between the iPod shown in the top post and the iPhone. So check that the lead you buy is the correct one, otherwise it wont charge!!

my headunit has the lead already attached so am going to use that , i know it doesnt charge it but cant do anything about it afaik
