well hoping to get the gearbox done in january, after talking to the guys at the meet the other night im wondering if anyone could give me a rough price comparison from just getting another auto put in or getting it converted to manual just so i know how much more id need if i went down the manual route

Look for a donor car to strip you will end up getting money back for rthe parts u sell plus have the full manual conversion. I bought Shrek's car and broke it as my auto is playing up but I will get it changed after the new year to manual. Its a lot of work but worth it, Ebay helping sell parts. With the current prices I would like to think u could get a donor car for decent money. As for the conversion, I am a mechanic to trade but I work on commercials/psv's but I have a price of £500 from a mate's garage to change the car to manual but I have fitted the clutch pedal and will strip out the centre console etc and am not worried about reverse lights working or the cruise control wiring etc. These bits I will tidy up myself.

Autoboxes seem to fetch around £300, although have seen them as cheap as £150. Labour to fit about £200

 

(if you dont already have an uprated Autobox oil cooler then budget an extra £100-£150 for one on top, it may save you from having to fit another autobox 6 months later.)

 

Manual conversion kit is typically around £700, although seen them for as cheap as £500. Labour to convert around £500.

 

One thing to consider is that a Manual car is typically worth £500-£1000 more than a similar spec Auto.

 

If you have the space/tools/time and moderate mechanical skills than neither job is too big to undertake yourself with the help of a friend when it comes to the heavy lifting parts.

 

Personally for me a Manual conversion would be the first thing I would do If I'd ended up with an Auto. The performance difference is very noticable and sooo much more fun to drive.

i dont mind doing some jobs on the car but i think il leave the gearbox to my mechanic lol really want a manual so may consider leaving it till the end of february rather than january and save up the rest of the money but then again im good mates with my mechanic so might see what he can do for me payment wise would be able to afford the conversion kit end of jan anyway so its just the labour costs il need to get

for the last 4 years i would of disagreed with this argument but after a 100 mile drive today in my auto i drove into my driveway..turned off the engine and thought "i miss my last manual zed" so next spring my perfect auto box will be for sale and ime converting to try and capture some love for my car again;)

Bri before you convert come and have a drive of mine and you will see the gearbox is the biggest pile of shit you will ever have the pleasure of driving:rofl:

My auto box is truly goosed, Ive got a noisy 1st and 2nd (sounds like someone has taken all the brake pads off my car and replaced them with industrial grade sandpaper) No reverse and no overdrive. got a couple of quotes off Phil in Astley. £140 to change, and £500 to convert, both plus VAT

I'm well pleased :dance:Drives better and I'm getting more MPG:nana2:

what difference in MPG is there, assuming similar driving habits?
