How to slow down in an auto

Again I drive G reg import with auto.

So if the position of the auto gear stick whilst stopped was not interesting enough ... what about slowing down?

As I come off the motorway onto the slip road I have developed the habit of disengaging the (so called) overdrive, to help the process of slowing. I now find myself shifting down to 2nd when I get down to say 2,500 rpm. Should I go further and shift to first - again when the rpm has reduced to a safe level or is this completely wrong and I should be using the brakes?

Again points are scored for being informative, point deducted for bad language.

KEEP IT SIDEWAYS!

I have not had my ZX for long but I keep hearing how bad the ZX brakes are but as someone else said they seem to me pretty good compared to other cars i have drivern (not sports cars)

So when someone says the 300ZX brakes are bad are they comparing them to the best brakes you can buy??

Or should i worried about my brakes??

Agreed .... but do they still include an emergency stop in the driving test? If so why?

ive found since owning the Zed i drive a bit further behind vehicles (unless im taking over someone) than i have in any other car before , couple of reasons really ,

1 - stock brakes are shite

2 - i have enough stone chips and i dont want anymore ,

the emergency stop is still in the driving test, but its not just for stopping when someone in front brakes hard , its also for things like ,

a child runs out into the road , a van pulls out from a junction , you missus decides to give u pleasure in the front seat not the back as its too cramped frown.gif

now if u had to brake hard due to these reasons beleive me you wont have chance to put the box in nuetral so just drive at normal speeds unless u on a open road and drive well behind the vehicles in front leave more room than the average breaking distance smile.gif

They're OK Barry for normal driving but if you drive the car fast and hard braking from high speeds results in fade and loss of braking power.

Trust me when I say that braking hard at 160 you have nothing at all going on in the rapid stopping department store window! LOL biggrin.gif

But like I say they are OK if you don't do much hard driving and as you pointed out are better than most cars.

Remember though that the Z is classed as a Super car and is very heavy and when you compare stock Z brakes with what Skylarks of the same era were getting as stock they are a joke. wink.gif

Simon,

putting the auto into N during an emergency stop would be the same as depressing the clutch during the same stop in a manual, imho

so leaving it in gear would be more sensible ?

I was told that you should never put an auto in Neutral while the car is moving. It can cause damage. I did it once in my 200SX and the engine stalled !!

In emergency scenario, there would be no advantage in putting the car in neutral before stopping.

Zimon

Wasn't referring to nething !!

If you're slowing down from 100mph+ and your brakes fade then you're fooked! so dropping down through the gears on an autobox can help prevent this from happening & is a good idea!

Trust me, I know cos the stock brakes have nearly got me in trouble a few times & that's what prompted me to start using the gears. Saying that, I wouldn't do it all the time cos you'll end up with a fooked box like I did!!!

Also, my 200SX will slow down more effectively than the 300ZX without brake fade!

1. i dont have to hang off the bumper of the car in front waiting for the tiniest of gaps to rev my 1.6 to the redline to over take

2. the power allows me a much more relaxed over taking manouevre when there is a real gap

3. the insurance premium on my zed is so much higher that i want to protect my investment a little more

Chris0r these are not directed at you, they are my own observations wink.gif i was just quoting your observation

yeah craig i thought of them too .....
