Was out on the Mway yesterday doing about 70mph when the revs suddenly shot up, it turned out the overdrive had stopped working. I carried on to my destination, came off the Mway and pulled into a supermarket car park to get fags, I was trying to manouver to park and put the shifter in reverse...the car didnt move so I give quite a lot of extra gas and the car juddered backwards (the best way to explain this is it felt and sounded like the exhaust had fell off and was digging into the road stopping proper movement. I then set off and as the box changed up through the gears 1st and 2nd had the same sound as if youve worn your brake pads away and are running metal on metal. the only gear that sounded 'normal' was 3rd. Got to my destination and now have no reverse whatsoever. Might sound like a totaly dumb question but is my gearbox knackered (And what exactly happened) and if so where could I pick up a decent second hand one, about how much and how much for fitting? Oh and ive heard the place to take it is a place in Astley, can anyone shed some light on this.

Thanks in advance

Fred

a proper reconed auto box is going to be in the region 1000 to 1500 fitted

a second hand manual conversion 500 to 800, plus any bits you decide to replace with new (ie clutch) probably in the 1200 region fitted

If you wish to keep the auto box, I would suggest having the filters and valve block cleaned on the existing box and fresh oil fitted. This is the usual cause of initial problem which when left leads to total box failure. If you buy another autobox secondhand, I would also advise getting this done before fitting.
