Agreed. Done that a few times too. If I go to my girlfriends for the weekend I have to travel 6 miles in the wrong direction to fill up with optimax. Would not use anything else unless I was desperate and then I'd drive it really carefully.

You may need to have a look at the wire elements. If any of these are broken, it will cause a very uneven idle. DaveCC had exactly this problem with his.
