You could try fairy liquid, hot water and some elbow grease..................... I don't know if it will work but it sounds reasonable to me

if left long enough it will end up looking and smelling like varnish and it dosent burn very well

I think the connector you are looking for is the grey one at the top on the RHS of the first pic The det sensor can be seen in the 2nd pic. Ignore the yellow circle(sic) its the black round thing in the middle of the pic, as has been said previously its normally an engine out job top replace this one has been repositioned on top of the block where it is less effective.
