Can anyone recommend a good CCTV camera for home use? Needs to have good night time capability.

My parents have had there windows shot at 4 times in the last month (smashed each time). They were shot at again today, we have had a feeling its the idiot who lives across the back from them but had no proof but when you line up both points of impact in the double glazing its coming directly from this feckers bedroom, he must be bored due to being tagged and confined to the house. What really pisses me off is that the police have been phoned twice today and all they have said is "we're busy so can't say if someone will be out today".

Any help as regards the CCTV would be great, i've looked at the ones on ebay but would prefer if someone could recommend a good one.

I believe, having spoken to the police in the past about this, that the person(s) being recorded could complain if you set up a fixed camera. However, camcorder footage would be looked at differently and could therefore be used in court. (CCTV footage couldn't, unless you had it registered and had the proper signage in place etc)

Maybe getting yourself a 2nd hand camcorder from eBay wouldn't be a bad idea anyway - could be cheap, what with gadget season just around the corner and it will probably have a good zoom you can put to good use.

I'd put it in the window on a tripod - recording to a PC all night and one day you will catch the bugger!

You can record something if it is happening there and then however you can't record anything that might capture anything over your boundaries otherwise you may be liable to civil proceedings. If the police were to install a camera to film the tw@t firing the air rifle they would need to justify it by applying for a RIPA )Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act)

another thing to remember is, a colour camera doesnt work with IR lights, only a black & white camera will. some modern cameras switch from colour to b&w when night time comes, but you are looking at big money for a good one. ive just sold a load of pro cctv gear as well. i do however have one left, its a colour camera with a huge zoom lens on it, it will zoom in & allow you to read number plates from around 200-300 yards, possibly more, and is clear as a bell. the camera runs from the mains & can be connected to tv via the yellow phono (video in) connector which is on most tvs now.

if it was me this was happening to, i would put the camera on the window ledge & film it like that, so its not in view of anyone.

Thanks guys for all the advice, thanks also to Croeso for pm'ing me with the details. Last night went without further incident, i took Brians (Znut) advice and set up my digital camcorder recording directly to VCR (4 hour long play) so my dad can just rewind and record. I'm not too bothered about the legalities of invading this bawbag's privacy but i'll be purchasing a proper CCTV camera shortly so hopefully just having that visually will be enough of a deterrent .

Could someone do you for invasion of privacy if you film them?

yes no camera can face off ur property and im pretty sure that revolving cameras are frowned upon also if the span leaves ur property ;)

I think its an air rifle, but the fact its passed throught 2 panes of double glazing would suggest its quite powerful.

The police arrived and had no idea why they were there, they had no idea this was the fourth time it had happened and then get this they said to my mum "what do you want us to do".:headvswal

if it can be proved the air rifle is over 12ft pounds of power then it would require a firearms licence ! (long shot i know)

but as regards cams i use black and white (due to dark area being filmed)

i know for legal purposes they prefer colour and time and date stamped cctv

My mums living room window just got shot about an hour ago now, same diameter hole. Rewound the tape and it has been recording on the wrong AV channel:headvswal

I don't think its the guy across the road after all because i was there within minutes and his parents were both in the kitchen and they seem nice people that wouldn't let him away with it.

I think it's the keystone cops up here lol, i looked out the door to see what was keeping them and they were talking to the neighbour 2 doors up trying to convince her she reported her window being broken:headvswal

The little barstewards must have some bottle as its not like they were shooting at the upstairs windows when no-one is there but shot the living room window where my mum was watching telly, she was a bit shook up as my dads out back shift.

Just in the process of purchasing some CCTV equipment, just waiting on the seller getting back to me with the specs.

I cant fookin believe the cops attitude, mention guns round here and you will end up with a swat team bursating down the door. I popped in to my rifle club tonight and the police firearms officer was there doing checks.....( then again its always easy to pick on the law abiding :) )

What you want to do is speak to your local MP, the Scottish government are hell bent on banning airguns, so this would give them more "ammo" and they will probably kick up a stink if they think that the police arent doing anything.

Its just a pity that tossers like this get away with this because its seen as something minor by the police, then they get cocky and take pot shots at people where someone gets hurt, or worse killed like the little boy in Glasgow. then Theres all hell to play, public outrage fanned by the media and then the politicians jump on the band wagon, next thing you know they are trying to ban airguns because of 1 arsehole, they never think of the 10000 other law abiding air gun users..

Anyway rant over!!! tell the cops you will go to your mp if they arent gonna do anything.... because someone is going to get hurt if they let him continue

The girl cop was insiting it could be a stone, i showed her both windows (the one that was done Sunday and tonight) i pointed out both were identical in diameter and if you line up the trajectory for both panes of the double glazing one was fired from one direction and the other from another direction, i also pointed out that the trajectory of the shot tonight is at such an angle a legal air rifle would have bounced of the window, she just looked at me blankly and said she didn't really know about these things:mac1:

bud thats a seriously powerful air gun to shoot a clean hole through 2 panes of toughened glass, I reckon a legal power gun might just be lucky enough to go through the first without shattering it.

I'll try and get some pics tomorrow, both are perfectly round and exactly the same size, the broken glass has actually powdered. The glazier has stuck a self adhesive poly cover over the first.

has it happened to any other houses or are they just targetting your Mum & Dad's?

I talked to my local councillor Vijay and he said there have been quite a few reports in the area, my parents house is at the end of the street then across the road its all fields, tree's and a small river

If the projectile has passed both panes then it's in your room somewhere! Check the hoover bag! I'm sure it's worthy evidence.

My mums just found a ball bearing in the kitchen, i've told her to check the living room so it looks like its been a catapult or something similar. These things must be feckin deadly

Could be a gas powered CO2 pistol - can be pretty powerful... you could make a formal complaint about the attending officer, there used to be a required level of intelligence to become a police officer!!

If it's happening pretty regularly, around the same time etc you could go and lie low in the fields at the back... wear gloves and I reckon they'll have learnt their lesson in 5 mins ;) Bet you any money the police will be taking statements left right and centre then tho!!

this could even be a 22 calibre rifle..these things just give off a little crack when shot and the way there going through the glass its looking like it is...have you found any round or pelet debri?? ide be going over that room trying to find the projectile:mad:

Found both of them Brian, two stainless steel ball bearings about 9-10mm in diameter. Looks like one of those high powered catapults, they must have some punch to them. My mum called the police and they said to keep hold of them.
