Hi

Got my engine out and the garage tell me these could do with a refurb.

Anyone got any ideas of a good engineering company that they have used to carry out the work and an idea on price per turbo?

Thanks

Andy.

Until a company actually views your turbos and assess their condition, the price will usually vary between £200 to £450 per turbo, providing that is that they are refurbishable. If the car was still running then you should not have a problem and costs should be quite reasonable.

Turbo dynamics will not refurb stock turbos, they will hoever turn them into hybreds for 700 quid each!!!

This is what they told me on the telephone last week.

Also i spoke to the direct importer of Garrett Turbos (Norris developments)the T25 is no longer made and they will not do refurbs due to the tollarances required. I am looking at JWT sport 500s from the states. Depending on the dollar situation it will work out cheeper.

Not sure why they told you that...or if they have only very recently stopped doing them.

I've dealt with them a lot over the past couple of years, having sent about a dozen pairs to them. Cost is dependent on Turbo condition but typically £300-£400 each for stock refurb with 360 bearings.

The other option for stock turbos is new CHRA's from the states, and reuse your old housings. Which would cost around £500

Or for a decent mild upgrade the Z1 GT525. More potential than the Sport500 for about same cost.

I rang him twice to check out what was being said then rang Norris and they comfermed that the t25 was not avalible as a new unit, I pointed them towards the various sites in the states but still told the same.

Someone must know the truth LOL

Thanks for this chaps some useful info.

The Z1 GT525. looks really interesting, it's a shame the exchage rate is so shite now otherwise they would be a real alternative to reconditioning.

I presume they are not available to buy in the UK?

Just had my turbos back from Turbo Dynamics. After examining them they turned them around in 4 days. £390 each plus VAT but this was for the 360 bearings.

They look fantastic, as good as new.

Maybe to clear a point in this thread, they can't get the housing anymore but all the internals are readily available.

Cheers

only cost me £200 to recon mine :D but i did it myself. with 360 bearing collar too and step gap ring seals.

Can I ask where did you get the parts from? And who balanced them. Cheers.

did mine myself as well, as long as theres no damage to impellors you dont need to rebalance them its just a case of marking everything before you take it apart so you can put it back together with everything n same place. thers acouple o people doing parts/kits on ebay, kits with 360 bearings and step gap rings approx £70 and you can get them balanced for approx £30.

Well worth doing it yourself if you consider the money you will save. Not a very hard job either just very fiddly. I didnt wanna risk not having them balanced.

is that £ per turbo, or for the set? and what kind of power can they take with 360 bearings?

Can anyone point me in the direction of the kit?

...

Just paid 900quid for 2 turbos to be refurbed! If i could have got the turbos out myself i would have done it! Did it on a mates T3 turbo took a while and as stated fiddely but alot cheaper and can be fun :D

360 bearings wont make any more power. Its just a reliability improvement.

You can make a little more power with large impellors and machined housings, but really the stock turbos are too small, they generate too much heat.

What are the standard tubs?

Stock Turbos are Hybrids of the Garret T25's, with a smaller TB22 turbine/exhaust side and 4 bolt design.

They are unique to the 300zx.
