Bonnet vents

Hi All,

 

Im having a custom carbon bonnet made and would like to add a vent to realise some of the high temps from the engine bay.

 

Where would you think would be best to place to put a vent?

 

I dont want to place it over apart of the engine that water may cause problems. But in a place that the vent or vents will actually work.

 

Also has any got any ideas on style of vent? I want one that will let the least amount of water in. No big scoops!

 

Was maybe thinking of the flat Scooby STI vent or just simple cut outs.

 

A few ideas I like this one off the 280z directs air aswell as a vent

IMHO - 2 vents. 1 each above the area where the turbo's reside.

 

But dont place them too far back as typically with aerodynamics the airflow pressure is higher toward the more rear of the bonnet, and for air to exit via the vent you need a lower airpressure.

I find that a small amount of water enters the engine compartment with the vent I have, the cooling benifit is very noticable.

That is what you really need is like Zoggs, but with a gutter or something to take the water away from the engine. By letting air through the engine bay, the cooling effect is quite significant. Thats got me thinking now.

with basic aerodynamics the air flow at the front of the bonnet is the stagnation point with the upward deflection of air being the upwash, thus creating the boundary layer. the airflow will then become laminar and the pressure will drop, the airflow will go toward the windscreen creating a second upwash and adding to the boundary layer, flowing over the car, becoming laminar and dropping in pressure, then becoming turbulent toward the back end when the air exits the rear end of the car.

 

when the airflow hits the car, it will drop in pressure.

 

this is only a description of basic aerodynamics, i know this, it's my job.

 

imho, the whole surface of the bonnet has low pressure air above it.

 

i would place the vents where you want them.
