Thanks to Jeff TT and Brian Corish for their help today on the phone.

After organising babysitters and spending ove 1500 euro on the Z last week getting her(91UK TT with 95K on the clock) ready for holiday to barcelona and south of France, its left me down again, (Tyres, water pump, timing belt, fan belt, fan clutch, new fan shroud, front silicone bush units done last week)

Drove 100 miles of the 2200 I was about to do to the Ferry in Roslare to Roscoff. Just before getting to the ferry the Auto Box seemed to be slipping. i.e. when flooring or overtaking she was not redlining ie struggling once at 5500 revs and from then on only creeping up and never kicking down to the next gear. The further I drove the worse it go until finally it seemed to be stumbling at even 2000 revs and I was down to 30 mphs. At fist I thought it might be the auto box on the way out but it was only fully reconned 18 months ago. The one job I didnt do was the fuel Pump. This has been buzzing for quite some time.

In the end even when the car was in neutral I tried to floor her and she made a feeble effort and only made it to about 1500 revs.

At this stage I had missed my ferry and felt like rolling the car into the nearby river and head home to think about what my next car would be. Damn annoyed.

I left the car for awhile and let it cool down.

Came back and headed for home.

Made it home, she was improving again all the time but still stuttering at high revs.

Just let her cool again for an hour and took her for a spin. Its quite cool outside now an no problem was encountered. Flying around as if she hadnt a care it the world.

Tomorrow I am fitting a replacement Fuel pump from My 94 SWB Jap spec(which is off the road due to autobox problems, cant drive it). I have rebooked the ferry for sunday and I am going to try again.

Am I mad or is the fuel pump my problem. If the clutch was gone in the autobox it should not have come back this evening where as the fuel pump problem can be intermittent as other Z owners have pointed out. All replies and thoughts appreciated

thanks

Roy,

Sorry to hear - seriously bad luck.

I had a Golf GTi which had similar symptoms to those you describe and it was fuel pump. Twice I had the AA out and when they arrived it ran fine because it had cooled down.

When I took it to the garage, they took the pump apart and found that as it wore, the tolerances got bigger. The problem was caused because latent heat under the bonnet was heating the outside of the pump more than the inside and so that was expanding more. This resulted in the pump not being able to deliver the pressure needed to open the injectors.

Good luck sorting it.

The poor thing thought you were sending it back to Japan and therefor refused to get on the ferry. You just need to explain to her that its just a holiday and she'll be fine!

Roy,

Sorry to hear about your trouble and hope you get away okay. I just wonder if it could be plugs as these caused me problems and there is a difference between UK & some import models (see http://www.300zx.co.uk/forums/ubbforum/Forum1/HTML/000346.html ). Do you have the old plugs to check? I really thought it was fuel starvation when I had (what sounds like) a similar problem.

If you want more information (from my memory) then send me an e-mail and possibly a contact number if you would rather speak. I'll check my e-mail lunch time.

(So you are not taking your bike then?)

I know how u feeling.

Same think happen to me.

I went for holidays (2 weeks)and i took her with me. It was right after i bought it.

Problem started with small hesitation which got worst in the next couble of days and in 3rd day it was dead. No mechanics evailable (it was holiday period) and nobody to help me out. I spend 2 miserable weeks.

But finally problem sorted out and since then It runs fine.

Anyway all the best

Was it also your fuel pump when you were on holidays???

I thought it was. But it was an electric wire (it was cut off) and as a result the hesitation. Then the wire was completely disconnected and couldnt start the engine.

Have you did a diagnosis on gearbox? Any error codes?

Did and ecu diagnostic gave 55.

Replaced fuel pump today and have been driving aroung and ther is no sign of the problem. Heading to France tomorrow but will do the auto diagnostic before I go. My mechanic practically guaranteed me it was the pump.
