Might be ordering a new car this time next year. Just wondering what's out there.

Gotta be something practical. The Z is my impractical partner.

I know it's a long way off, but trying also to think of anything semi-interesting that's coming onto the market.

I like the new Lancer (not evo). Very cheap and very highly spec'd. I hate SUVs, but also glanced at the Qashqai. Not really my thing, but a fully spec'd up one might be quite cool.

Nothing really on the Euro market that really excites me. There's a new Golf coming out at the end of the year 'yawn'. Focus...well, it's a Ford and whilst they are good, they don't really do anything for me. The Mondeo is too big really....but saying that, I like the new C5 from Citroen....I know, I know. But it looks pretty good. I can't stand ANYTHING from Peugeot, don't want a Vauxhall, had too many of those. The Astra is getting a bit long in the tooth and the new Insignia..well, again, probably too big really.

Don't like the Avensis, it's nice to drive, but is as old as the hills, new one is due, but not fussed by it. The new Accord is nice and so is the Mazda 6, which are two others I think fit the bill, yes, they're big, but they are styled nicely and look sleak. The Accord is just a facelifted version of the old car and TBH, although it's good, is quite pricey over its rivals.

There's a lot of nasty stuff that I'd rather shake a stick at like the Kias, Hyundais, Chryslers etc.

I know other stuff will be on the market in a year's time, but currently, I'm quite liking this (although I'm not the biggest fan of the interior!)

Anyway, just throwing a few ideas about if anyone has any further ones.

mmmmm, how about:

a) Skoda Octavia vRs - Massively underrated car, great to drive, very practicle

b) BMW 120d Coupe - Jodies current company car, suprisingly good fun to drive, 600 miles to a tank of fuel and very comfy over distances, better looking that its hatch sibling, BMW make the best most refined diesels FACT!

c) Kia Pro 'ceed - very highly rated and one of the best cars out of Korean region, pretty funky looking in the candy apple green and candy apple red colours.

Hopefully some food for thought for you mate

You picked one of my favourite 'worst cars' there. Can you guess what it is? It's not the Kia BTW. ;)

If your considering SUV's the new Mitsubishi 'outlander' is a nice vehicle in Black...Gut where i work has just bought one. Plus, low emissions on some units meaning lower tax bands and i think the 2.2 mivec unit does 40+ to the gallon? I assume as it's company related that it might also fall inside the contract hire rates if your firm use that as a guide?

SUV really isn't where I want to be going. I really dislike them. They have a purpose, but that's not with me driving up and down the motorway in one.

As for a guide. I can have what I want to a certain value and insurance group which is why I think Nick's suggestion of the Skoda might not work which is a shame as I like the Octavia VRS.

Whoever said that the 1series coupe is better looking than the hatchback version should not be alowd to post in car recommendation threads! :P

Ps. Thanks for the spacers, Si. Sorry I wasn't in to greet you.

Still liking the Mazda 6. So it's a strong contender.

Right then, I'm gonna be ordering in a few months time I think. VW have just launched a new 'R-line' version of the Passat, which I do really like with a high output 1.4 turbo. So, I can finally wave good by to the diesel. The 1.4 turbo has slightly less power than the 2.0 diesel, with similar emissions, but the car is LOT cheaper AND it's smoother being a petrol. I hate diesels. 1.4 turbo has about 170lbs ft of torque, so adequate for motorway driving and has a 6 speed box with cruise control.

I've never really been the biggest VW fan, but a friend of mine had the current Passat when they were first launched and they are a great cruiser, well built and are spacious.

R-line is nice as well as it has a nice bodykit very similar to the R36.

I won't get a white one though. Biscay Blue is a colour I really like....

Right, just ordered a VW Passat R-line. Been leaning more toward this than pretty much anything else. They are quite affordable and excellent value for money, even compared to the Mondeo and Insignia which have seen umpteen price rises since launch. VW had only 2 price rises this year and as such are still good value.

R-Line looks great with the bodykit, nice wheels and decent spec.

I have gone for Biscay blue too and upgraded the audio system to touch screen, dual zone climate, and a few other bits and peices.

Here's the estate version of the colour/spec I've ordered. :)

nice car Si. Shame the engine is smaller that the average milk carton, the turbo must do the job well. Out of interest what rpm does it sit at at 70mph?

how about the new VAUXHALL INSIGNIA VXR?

vauxhall-insignia-vxr-2009.jpg

Well there was a reason I didn't go for the Passat R36.....ever heard of something called 'price'??? ;) I said already the Insignia was not the value for money car it 'should' be even on low brow models.

It has a 6 speed box. Sits at around 2,500rpm @ 70 I think. So pretty low. Very very smooth. Has more power than the old 2.0 petrol!

well it aint so bad when u get £2000 scrappage & 17% discount for working at VAUXHALL :-)

The only car I have over 10 years old is a Nissan 300zx Twin Turbo. Think they are some sort of sports car..... ;)

The Insignia VXR is £30k+....waaaayyyyyyy outside my budget even if I did have a measly £2k off list via a scrappage scheme. If I had £32k to spend on a new car, it wouldn't be a Vauxhall....as cool as the Insignia VXR actually is, it would be a Passat R36. It's faster, has more power, is better looking (subjective), better built and won't be worth 50p after 5 years.

I like German cars. They rarely excited me visually, but great mechanicals and quality.

Collected this on March the first with a new 10 plate. Ordered it in November last year with a few options. Fogs, touch screen system and dualzone climate.

To say I am happy is an understatment. I've just come back from a weekend in southern Normandy and the car is just fantastic. An excellent cruiser and I am so pleased with how good biscay blue looks in the sun! It glows so nicely.
