Hi Guys,

Got to remove an autobox off an N/A and been told I have to remove the 4 bolts that hold the torque converter on before I remove the gearbox as I want to keep the autobox and torque converter in 1 piece. How do I get to the 4 bolts though?

Cheers

Vijay

The torque convertor isn't connected to the autobox, it just slide on the shaft so just remover the autobox then using a 14mm angled ring spanner remove the t/c from the fly then just slide it back on to the shaft of the autobox if you want to keep them together.

You can remove the gear box cover plate to expose the torque converter which you can see from the nearside wheel arch. With a socket and extension bar you can get to the bolts. You need to turn the engine using the large (32mm i think) nut on the bottom pulley until you can see a bolt, then undo and remove. Turn the engine again until you can see the next bolt and so on.

cheers guys. Can't get to the bolts from the starter motor opening, it's on the wrong side of the bolts. I'll have a look for the cover plate :)

So doesn't it matter if the torque converter and gearbox are seperated? I was told not to seperate them :( Do they not have to put back on a certain way???

Its just a splined shaft with an o'ring on the end from what i can remember Vijay, i've done 3 autobox changes all for TT's and never had any issues with orientation but i imagine it would be the same for an N/A.

Yer as said the box comes off without the converter being touched. Its just the top bolts of the box that can be awkward. Loads of extensions if i remember LOL

Cheers guys. Any idea why I was told to remove the 2 together, does in make sense in anyway?

Might of been to stop any oil spilling out of the T/C but i've never had that happen but its the only thing i could think of. Or to make sure you don't lose the rubber o'ring.

my experience is that it's easier when you remove both together.

if you leave the TC on, you have very little room to remove the box, as you first have to move the gearbox quite a bit backwards to clear the TC

I found that by removing the front sub-frame bolts and allowing the engine to drop a bit helps getting the gearbox off and on mainly back on but i had no problems removing the box with the t/c in place.

I'll see how I get on tomorrow :)

I remember jacking the front of the engine up to tilt it so i could get to the top bolts easier.
