Well i started my business about 6 months ago and i still work full time for a courier but my business is going really well and my business partner is already working full time and more importantly getting paid by the business but its taking up most of my time and its having a big impact on my full time job, in fact such a big impact i nearly lost my job last week!!

So do i take the plunge and hand my notice in and go for it???

We have a good amount of business coming in and a new contract which if all goes well should pretty easily be able to pay me what i need to survive ie pay the mortgage but its still a huuuuuuge thing to give up that guaranteed monthly salary.

mmmmhhh hard decision to make im doing something similar my self ie helping a m8 run his own firm in the day as a co partner and i work in a it call centre most evenins ! as weve just started the company back up we aint gotta make those decisions YET and are just taking things one step at a time due to are work being weather dependable & current credit crunch etc so were keepin or gauranteed income's for now

on the advice point id keep the gauranteed money comin in until u get the pounds rollin in at a similar level with a sustainable client and supplier base

hope u come to the right decision m8:D

a year ago i would have said go for it no problem - with the uk as it is at the moment i would be more hesitant

there is no right or wrong - both being employed, and self-employed have there own benefits

whatever you choose - good luck mike :D

regards,

Mike the courier business is hard to get into during the summer months as quite a lot of students do it in between studies. I would thin k that if it doesnt go too well with your own business then you will have no problems getting another courier job being as you are experianced so I would say take the plunge and go for it mate. You will no doubt get a lot more satisfaction from doing what you want rather than what you have got to. :D

Good luck mate.

Mike Hi Mate

See if your employer will let you do a 3 or 4 day week, that way you can dedicate time to each job.

If you had asked 1year ago, definate yes. Current climate and the amount of small businesses I have seen go bang working as a large contractor, id say keep the day job and see how things pan out.

Ps. Just won a project in the North East that I am just sending enquiries out for if you are interested? 70-80k package.

Mike don't be soft. In this present climate sick where you are and keep the business on the QT. I maybe looking for a job soon anyway. "where's the begging smiley"

LOL who knows ;)

tbh the reason i am looking to give up my day job is we are really busy and struggling to keep up at the moment and no let off in work coming in.

it took me along time to set this up to make sure it was done right with the right pricing structure and more importantly the right customer service and (touches wood) its really working, we are winning contracts from people who have had them for 15 years plus just because we do our work on time for a decent price and if anything goes wrong it gets put right straight away!! i am genuinly shocked of the companies we have come up against and the prices they charge, in some cases they are more than double and we make good money :)

  • Author
So do you install or just supply

we do both but we have just won a few contracts which is just labour only so no hastle with supplying materials and the money aint bad either LOL saying that the work is not easy and not the nicest but hey thats life, no pain no gain ;)

I set up my own business about 6 months ago and it is a real struggle, although we are getting by the mrs has had to get a full time job whilst i juggle the baby and the shop.

Im sure the motor trade will pick up soon though and if we weather this storm, then we can get through anything. In a way its good to set up in a recession because you expect it to be slow to start with so its no suprise when it is.

i set up my buisness 32 years ago and ime still struggling:rolleyes::rofl::rofl:

Bit of a dodgy time ahead for flooring companies, not much if any new builds going on until who knows when. But if you've got a full order book, private customers and a contract with say social housing, then go for it, but think about upping your prices a bit because it sounds like you're too cheap :)

tbh we have never done any new builds so not too bad, its quite nice as we have a nice selection of domestic amtico stuff coming in regularly and some nice commercial contracts including a couple of pub chains which pay really good money, we have several other huuuuuge irons in the pan as well and if they all come off then that pretty much books us up most of next year :)

Whatever you choose to do, I wish you the very best of luck.

For what it is worth in my experience repeat business and the best word of mouth is the best way to success. Keep up the good work.

cheers buddy

i think i am going to fudge it until i get paid at the end of the month then hand my notice in :)

getting quite excited about it now :D

good luck dude people aren't moving at the moment so a lot could be set to upgrade what they have. I've thought about going on my own many times but finding work and pricing , pulling money in is a full time job alone without actually doing the work put me off a bit. If there's two of you and you get on properly and trust eachother all should be a lot easier ..
