Ill try and be as specific as i can on this and ive done a search and found nothing. My car has been driving fine, no probs, then the other day i set off quick, the wheels spun, and the car juddered. But after that a sqeaking started, coming from the front somewhere. Not like a suspension creaking, more like a spinning noise. Like something is catching on something spinning. Quiet high pitch. I thought it was a turbo at first, but when i accelerate i can hear it, but when i put the clutch in the sqeaking stops. So my thoughts are its somewhere in the drivetrain, but after the clutch somewhere. Had a new clutch and flywheel last week (fidanza flywheel and rps max). Any ideas/help much appreciated, its a bit embarrasing.

cheers

Could be the bonnet catch, very comon on these. I had to put insulating tape round mine and replace it every now and then. give that a go.

That's so true! It took me ages to sort out a squeak that I was convinced was comming from the front suspension.

Turned out it WAS the bonnet catch. I just lowered it a bit and all was good.

just bin out in the car again, its nothing like that, its from under the car, it stops compleely when i put the clutch in or even just apply pressure th the clutch pedal, it does it under acceleration, deceleration and normal crusing and at all speeds, unless i put the clutch in. It even started doing it when stationary, but again, stops when i press the clutch, so im thinking its something in the clutch.

and its getting no better.

Another thing ive noticed, when i start the car there's a loud scrapping sound. Sounds like a heatshield catching on something spinning. And then the sqeaking takes over. Going to jack the car up and have a look underneath but any advice or potential thing to look for would be helpfull.

cheers

It sounds like the clutch release bearing, did you not replace it when you had the new clutch plate and flywheel?

clutch release bearing thats what i was thinking, but would of been changed at the same time surely

cheers lads, Phil at blackmoor service station did the clutch and flywheel, he would have done that im sure. I went out last night and the crunching when the car was starting got worse, then when i stopped the engine and tried starting it again the starter motor just spun and the engine didnt start. Is this a faulty solanoid or a new starter motor?

And what kind of cost/work is involved if this is the case?

thanks again.

If the noise disapears when the clutch pedal is pressed then its an internal gearbox bearing, but thats more of a whinning noise not so much a crunching noise. Mine has been making a whinning noise since i bought the car. I just live with it as its nothing to worry about they whine for years. Il live with it till i get a recon.

Does the squeek noise change pitch when the engine is reved in neutral?

Now the crunching noise seems to me like something to do with the ring gear or starter motor pinion gear? starter motor not disengaging when it should. or teeth missing from the gear? I hope for your sake its starter motor problem and not ring gear :(

You have checked the starter motor is bolted up tight and not shaking around underneath

Chris D.you got it bang on there mate, the starter motor was indeed hanging off the car, so i got it off and both holes where stripped. Nightmare. Ive re-tapped the threads now and put slightly longer and thicker bolts in. Anyone doing this in the future, dont put to long a bolt in, because it will hit the clutch/flywheel etc. Sounds obvious but worth mentioning.

Car starts and runs fine now, and the original sqeaking noise has gone.

Thanks for all you help guys, as ever, the 300zx club is an endless vat of knowledge.

thanks again

Your a funny guy. lol. Dont worry yourself about your beautiful car, its in good hands. Still needs the remap etc but its on the way. Am surprised to find the starter motor like that though, specially after having a new clutch fitted, the hydraulic line went a day later aswel. Spose thats just the way it goes.

Thanks again everyone.
