Hi all, newbie here

Ok i'll list what i've got then tell the problem.

Rebuilt engine

new water pump

nismo thermostat

AMS pully kit, under driver crank,p.steeringand alternator with over drive water pump

Z-Centre electric fan kit

Defi blue gauges, water temp, oil press and boost

555 injectors

Z1 intercoolers

Z1 Howe Rad

Upgraded turbos, about 22 psi. Running boost jets at 14.5 psi

and JWT Air filter.

Problem is it's running really hot, and once the elec fan kicks in at 85 degrees it don't turn off. It'll go as high as 215F ( gauge is in fahrenheit ) 101C. If I turn the heating on in the car full blast I can knock 15F off the gauge. The fan is sucking air and it is really hot the engine, almost burnt fingers. The wierd thing is the Aux fan has never come on even when the gauge showed 215F. Also the normal dash gauge for temp doesn't budge. sits just below half way.

now with the Howe Rad when driving at 70mph i'd expect the temp to be at about 170F (76C) but it sits at 185 (85C). now this is thebit that really concerns me. If i boot it at full boost, the temp jumps 15/20F them takes a while to come down again, 10 mins or so.

At first i thought the elec fan wasn't up to the job, then thought it shouldn't be needed when driving at 70mph. I'm starting to think the thermostat is dicky? anyone agree ? just thought i'd get another opinion before pulling it all apart. Or anyother ideas i'd be grateful.

Sorry I was getting the oil regulator temps and thermostate temps mixed up as my Brain was thinking that the oil cooler feeds etc are your problem and still do. The Nismo Thermstat opens at 62 C and atandard as you rightly say opens at 79 C

Markzx, I understand what you are saying about the bigger turbos making the oil hotter, but I can get very hot water temps without even boosting the car ( driving it like my gran ) So don't see how that can be my problem.

Does anyone know if you have to put sealant on the stat when fitting it ?

But what are your oil temps in relation to the water temps

Don't have an oil temp gauge ( yet ) so have no idea. Where did you get your sandwich plate to connect temp gauge too? or however you fitted it. cheers

I noticed SPL parts sell a high flow thermostat claiming to flow better

Just an update for those wanting to know the outcome of changing the fan and stat. Sorry but i didn't get to do it as the heavens opened and i don't have any cover. As i'm off on holiday for 3 weeks it's not going to get done until mid october now. But i will post an update when i have done the work.

Ok i replaced the electric fan with viscous fan, what a difference. It now won't go above 180F, it was going to 220 with electric. So in my opinion, i'll never put an electic fan on my Z again. I left the Nismo stat in. When crusing it sits at 160F ( 71C ). Also the electric fan was causing overrun. Meaning i could take the key out the ignition before engine shutdown. Now it dies as soon as i turn the key.

fookn heck mate thats running cool! ive been moaning about my running temps for ages - tend to be about 185F under good driving, rising to just under 200F in traffic - max out at 210F if its really struggling. funnily enough the colder the weather, the hotter the engine runs. i have a stock viscous and stock thermostat.

glad you got it sorted though mate you must be well chuffed!

Was a genuine Nissan pump fitted? also was the Nismo thermostat off e-bay?

Dont want to upset but i think the ecu is not happy intill you get to 80deg (or something like that) and changes the map/mixture thinking the cars cold.

You maybe right, but the car is running perfectly, getting full boost ( 19psi ) and even with 555cc injectors i'm getting 150miles out of half a tank of petrol. To me that is pretty good, if people get better i'd love to know.

Ive seen tests on viscous fans vs twin electric fans of various sizes and the viscous forces more air than any electric fans can.

I have been saying this for ages now and everyone was going the electric fans are fine, no they arnt simply because they cant match the viscous fan output
