Hi Guys,

Just wanted to know peoples opinions on resprays. What sort of quality do you expect from a bodyshop. I realise it's never going to be as good as factory but what would you be happy with?

Mines in pearl white and I know imperfections show through more in a pearl and obviously can only be flattened so much but I found quite a few marks still on the car but it's still got to be polished so I didn't say anything............

Cheers

Vijay

Oh right. Well my car was stripped back to bare metal for the second time last July and since then it's sat in a garage and had the filler work done to it in bits and pieces when people turned up. So by April/May of this year, the car was in shape but had surface rust and all panels need going over with filler/stopper. They originally were gonna charge £2.5k to spray the car but when they got it, decided the bill was then £4.5k so they can't moan about not charging for the prep work!!!

it starts first turn of the key and it got started now and again, but probably not more than 10 times over the last 20 months, not been driven at all :(

sorry to make you worried more but im worried after all this milarky over the cost of the paint, but you sure you wont have to folk out for a new engine/components

well the only think I get when I started it is noisy tappets but that goes after it's warmed up for a while. I trust my mechanic 100% and if there are any engine problems, I know he'll sort it out himself as that's something he has control over ;)

I just can't believe people! Just spoke to one of the partners at the first garage and he went and looked at my car. In his opinion I'm being fussy and you can only notice the marks if you look and there are only a few marks here and there. He also said I should compare it to how it was when they brought it there! lol They're all having a meeting tomorrow to decide what they intend to do but the fact they all think I'm being fussy and are comparing the job to when they took it on suggests they're not gonna play ball. I can't believe they're happy paying £4.5K for a job with marks every where but that's their problem!

Looks like it may have to go down the legal route :(

Well, what a response!!!!!

First off, you brought it to him because you wasn't happy with the paint that was on there!

Secondly, go and have a look at some of the other cars they have painted, see what condition they're in.

Thirdly, can you get an independant inspection by AA, RAC? I know for a fact Autolign inspect cars to see if they are repaired to or above manufacturers standard so finance can be had on cat C & D vehicles.

I am not sure if they will come out to view a car though, you will need to make enquiries.

I do know that Autolign are VERY well respected, basically what they say goes.

Years ago they had the power to declassify a car from cat C & D and take it off the condition register ;) so they have some big clout ;)

HTH dude.

Cheers Rob, that will come in handy as it looks like I'll be going down that route.

Good news for me :) I called the first garage as they didn't call me yesterday. The second garage are not backing down and say it's a good job and I should accept it. I have refuse to accept the job and will not take my car back. They are now going to move to the car into a differnt lockup and I will arrange for someone to look at the car and tell me what they think. Based on that I will be getting a proper inspection and report done and give the first garage the findings. They then either pay for it to be put right or we go on to a small claims court for them to sort the matter.

I'm contemplating getting a mechanical report done too as Pete hilighted the possibility of mechanical problems due to it sitting for 20 months. What's your thoughts on that?

Cheers

Well my parents have a 2001 X Volvo V70 T5 that has done 2,400 miles from new. I don't think there is much to worry about.

But if you get an Autolign inspection, and they say it's a sub-standard job they have not got a leg to stand on. End of discussion.

;)

i'd deal with the paintwork first and get a solicitor's opinion... i would assume that the original sprayer's terms would exclude consequential losses - no point paying out on another report if you're unable to claim!

Shouldn't be too many problems really - although it's obviously not ideal to have a car sitting so long... tyres will probably be knackered tho!

Cheers guys. No problems for tyres, got a nice new set of Falken 452's to go on my refurbed wheels ;)

Just got back from speaking to my mate who's a partner/mechanic at the first garage and told him what I intend to do with the car as in an independent inspeaction and if it's at fault, small claims court. He was gutted it's come to this but totally understands where I'm coming from. The really amusing thing is his business partner wants to take me to court but for what he had absolutely no idea :wack: lol I just laughed, even Tommy Cooper never had a better joke than that!!!
