Work very kindly arranged half a day driving for four of us for developing a whole new M.I. site which we attended last Wednesday over in Staffordshire. absolutely hacking down with rain, and quite a narrow track. Me and Will chose to drive the Lambo Gallardo and the Ferrari 355 Berlinetti, and the two others ended up with a V8 Vantage and a Ferrari 360 (cos someone broke the 355!)
the Gallardo was my first car - interior was way too cramped and to be able to reach the pedals properly I had to have the steering wheel up to my chin, lol! the pedals are way too thin and too close to eachother, and while trying to control the car in the rain and with a cockpit the size of a fag packet the instructor was getting me to take the corners as fast as possible! great laugh, though the throttle was so responsive that one tap and she tried to step out and I ended up going wide. awesome machine though, she was kept in third all the time, and pulled like a train right from exiting a corner right up the straight and through the chicanes. 500bhp 4WD and full of computers, and apart from me over-throttling through the 180 degree corners, she remained completely stable. its a shame i only had 6 short laps as my confidence in her stability would have grown and i could have flown through the chicanes without braking.
the next car was an ex-Le Mans 355! now this car i could have driven all day! cockpit was a little larger and there was room to actually move your arms around. 450bhp RWD with absolutely no computer assistance whatsoever! however she was easier to drive than the Gallardo, she seemed far less powerful, and i had to use 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears to match the same speeds as the Lambo did stuck in 3rd. throttle was smoother and i could take the corners tighter and power out of them earlier. fantastic car, and despite its 80's appearance this particular model was produced in 1999!
then it was off to the off-road track to wind down, which meant driving a Discovery at 2mph around a giant heap of sh1te
