i know i keep changing my mind about which car i want next, but ive been out i my neighbours sti type uk and its awesome, feels and looks stunning, goes like shit off a stick

problem is, i love the P1 aswell, anybody had any dealings with the P1, ie runing costs maintinence and so on

prices ae quite similar on the P1 and the STI type uk, as is the insurance

im just after something different a bit newer, am sick of my 16 year old car breaking all the time

please shoot me down in flames lol

the P1 is now getting on a bit, 8 or so years old, problems are starting to be highlighted, as with all classics subaru boxer engines they are prone to piston slap on number 3 due to excessive wear from oil starvation. Which is a rebuild time, but the P1's i believe are notouriously bad, which i dont tihnk is wholey the cars fault, most of them have had a hard life!

Personally if you wanted a scoob id go for as new as possible, uk sti, similar power to the P1, little bit heavier but much newer (for 10k or so anyway, which will get you an average P1) theyve got more toys, and look better and of course are far more practical.

Also, ive been told in the past that the engine in the classic (which a p1 basically is) was a prety much standard 2.0 boxer engine which subaru simply bolted a turbo to the side of. The engines (and turbos) in the later cars are actually much better both in design and build, and dont suffer so much from the problems.

Put it this way, ever seen a standard bug eye/eagle eye broken down? I know i havnt! Ever seen a classic on the side of the motorway?? I know i have!

I've got a 57 STI UK Alan. I looked at the P1s too as I love that shape and would have liked a 2 door. In hindsight I'm glad I went for the more modern car, even if it is a 5 door.

Don't buy a P1. They look great enough but anything for 10k is going to have been driven to within an inch of it's life and you see loads of P1s advertised with new engines around the 40k mark lol.

STI UK all the way. You won't regret it :D Try and get the 2.5L boxer with the 6 speed box if you can.

I had a p1 on a w reg 2000 lovely looking car turns heads every were it went.

But the egine give up on me one day coming home from work big end bearings had gone took it to subaru in cardiff for an inspection and basically they wanted £4500 for a new shortblock engine and other parts and labour i was gutted after paying £13,00 for her 18 months before it happened.

If you are looking to get one make sure its had a full rebuild regardless of milage mine had full subaru history with 51,000 miles on her its a common fault with the that engine.

Go for the new impreza i know there 5 door but the 2.5 engine is much stronger if i could turn back the clock i would have.

My brother in law has a UK Sti on a 54 plate. It looks modern and has cost him next to nothing to maintain. Interior is plastickly but much better than the classic Scooby. Ride is firm but not overly harsh. Performance is "ok".

Its not really my cup of tea tbh. If I was going to go for a newish 4 door sports saloon then It would probably be something from Audi/Bmw/Merc. or If I really wanted to stay jap then an Evo.

Initially I didn't like the new shape STI, but I recently had a good nose around the showroom and as with the EXO X...I want one.

Problem for me was the sales man, who wasn't at all interested....new jake all about the car and then stated that he didn't follow motor sport or the WRC....WTF...surely he should know everything there is to know about the car and then some...

My mate had a p1 big end bearings went, seems to be a bit of a weak point on these engines.:)

cheers guys, seems i should keep away from p1's

the only german alternative is a audi S4 (2000 model), but its not really lairy enough if ya know what i mean

A mate of mine had (still has actually), an imprezza terzo edition.

His bottom end blew aswell, at approx 80k i think. Cost him in

excess of £3.5k to put it right.

You have been warned! ;)
