Chris here

Just had my nissan in the garage and been told ive possibly had water leaking into the rear cylinders. (Im a mechanic in the army so i know a little bit but not much about the zeds as cant get to anything to learn) This morning the garage informed me that i would probably need a new head gasket in the near future dont mind as i would pay anything for that car but was wondering if i could get the turbos replaced at the same time to save money due to labour (with the head being off for the gasket change)? what would you suggest are my best options? You may wonder why i would want to change the turbos but thats just me after more power.

Unfortunately, removing the heads does not afford better access to the turbos. Ideally, you need to remove the engine, or with extra special perseverence it is possible to do the turbos from underneath.

If you wanted to save time, and maybe some money, you may be better off removing the engine and doing all those jobs at the same time, as even doing the head gasket with the engine in is time consuming.

i was told the engine should really be removed. its turning into a nightmare. have you had head gasket changed? if so how much u pay?

been quoted £1800 for the turbos thas including labour and everything which is why i was thinking about head gasket at the same time.

£1800 doesn't seem that bad, depending upon spec of turbos, of course ...

Cheers

Just picked up the car from garage and spoke to the mechanic he reckons when i get the gasket and turbos done i may aswell have new rings, liners, bearings and seals replaced at the same time to get it 100%. ive also mulled over this idea what do you think? bearing in mind he did mention the fact of saving a large amount on labour due to having it done all at once so i guess he isn't ripping me off.........

Is it possible to adjust the auto transmission on my 1990 300zx to get faster gear pick ups as it seems quite sluggish?

if you are in manchester go and see Phil at C&S wood in Astley - he knows all their is to know about Z's and is very friendly - He'll be able to tell you whats worth doing and whats not.

for the auto you can get a HKS ALC, Automatic line controller, this tells the auto ecu to keep the pressure up at high rpm , i believe, giving faster gear changes. Don't know anyone in the UK who sells it but you can get them from over the pond, Z1 and conceptzperformance sell them. Or try your luck on ebay for a used one. But , someone correct me if i'm wrong, i believe your auto should be in very good condition using this, cos of the extra pressure put on it.

agreed - I had the ALC2 and although it was great fun, it killed my autobox (which could have been in any state of repair for all i knew) leading me to have a manual conversion. i got mine from DTA - dont know if he still does them or not

How long did it take to kill your box Dave???

ooh about 6 months, lol!

Bloody hell

Oh well, when i can afford a manual conversion i'll fit one of those till it destroys my auto box!

Any ideas where i can get bits of body trim from like the top plastic strip thingy along the bck of the car just above the rear lights, also the thin metal strips running lengthways along the roof on either side. ive looked at all the major and some small sites but they don't have the bits im after so im assuming its a trip the the scrap yard but haven't seen many zeds in a scrap yard recently???

The black strip above the lights is a sticker, you can get from nissan for, i think i just paid £30 for that and the twin turbo ( seperate ) lettering to go on too. If you want part numbers let me know, got it in the car. As for the other bits, if it's what i think it is you are after, zcentre sells them. T-Tops are a sod to fit, you have to dismantle the whole t-top to get to the screws holding the black trim down. Luckly others have done it and there is a how to on twin turbo.net for you to look at.

Just had a thought, although just as bad on the gearbox i believe. check out ess-racing.com he does a paddle shift for the auto. Not cheap but a hell of a lot more fun. You could always sell it when you go manual.

cheers, have you got that part number? would be much appreciated...... when you say nissan you do mean any dealership?

Yeah i got them from my local nissan dealership.

The big black sticker going above the lights

part number 93094-42P10 £8.67 +vat

the TwinTurbo

93094-40P02 £12.41 +vat

you can get the nissan to go on the left, but i didn't bother with that so don't know the part number.
