What operating system.....

You should be able to do a system restore but I don't know how to it in anything but Vista.

If you boot the machine and keep pressing F8 you should get a menu offering Safe Mode etc and there may be an otion there

Some of the IT Techies will be able to help more than I can but try that for starters

Unless I'm very wrong, and I stand to be corrected, that could indicate a hard drive failure.... Hope not for your sake and I hope you've got everything backed up

Did you make emergency startup disks when you set it up or got it ? either a CD or floppies that you can use as an alternate boot source and then see if can access the C drive ?

If not has anyone got a Copy they can email to you ?

Then you can use that to boot the machine

I had this a few times over the years. The best course of action IMO is buy another HD install your OS on it set the old one as a slave and import everything you need onto the new HD. Then throw the old one away or at least destroy it.

you could try this... download puppy linux http://www.puppylinux.org and put it on a memory stick. Turn the PC off and then on and get into the bios setup... once you've done that change the boot order to boot off usb first and save. Stick the memory stick in a usb slot and reboot. This should boot into a very basic desktop and you can then mount the hdd drive in that and see if it's accessable at least (the linux core runs off the usb stick)... hope this make sense... sorry if it doesn't..

obviously you can only do this if you have a second PC to download to... i've just realised that...sorry

An alternative is if you find someone to help they could set up your old HD as a slave on their PC then dump all your important files onto their HD then zip the lot and later transfer it back to your new HD. As far as the OS the best way is either I will send you an XP disc that I dont use anymore. Not a pirate :) Its a boxed item, install it onto the new HD and away you go mate?

Let me know if you need any more help.

Not if its a HD failure. Sometimes you shut down and for some stupid reason it looses a file or 2 and unless you have a re-install disc for that OS it is lost mate. BUT! there can be so many different reasons for this to happen. I had a HD go down and managed to recover it and it went again and I did so again but it didnt last very long. The best policy is to get another HD and they aint too expensive about £40-£60 quid for a decent sized item. I am not sure but will have a look to see if my son has a spare ready installed with XP that I can send you bud. Give me 15 mins and I'll find out?

What operating system are you using mate? From that BSOD (blue screen of death) it looks like windows 2000 or near abouts, and the reason it blue screened was to do with the registry. Ill help you out more when you tell me what operating system you use. Cany you currently boot to windows, what messages if any are you getting

  • Author

hi bud. It is windows 2000 yeah.

Ok, you turn it on, i get the black screen that says the system has been shut down wrong or whatever and i can start windows normally, safe mode, last known good start etc etc. Doesn't really seem to make a huge difference which you pick, so if i start windows normally it comes up with the windows logo and starts loading. After a short time it then brings that screen up for a split second and restarts

Just a thought.....

Can you boot it into Safe Mode ? If you can can you access the HD ? If you can, can you run an anti-virus scan ? Just a poss it could be a virus.

Looks like the registry is has somehow become corrupt (possibly a virus as TonyB says) which means you won't be able to boot Windows at all. The only thing you can do is - as has been said before - back up the files you wan't to keep (onto a friends computer maybe?) - then get yourself a Windows installation disk and do a clean install onto your hard drive. However, I'm guessing that your HDD is of pretty low capacity (if it's old enough to have 2000 on it) so it might be worth upgrading anyway?

Good luck with it :)
