Here goes - we've all heard this one before...

Tonight I have cleaned all the connectors throttle bodies etc to try and solve the old Z problem of hesitation. The car now idles nice and smooth but sometimes it accelerates slower than a Metro!!! I am worried it could be the Airflow meter - does this need adjusting after fitting an aftermarket air filter??? Any help much appreciated before I start throwing money I haven't got at it!!!

PS If your car does have a rough idle - clean the throttle bodies out - it works a treat!!!

Andy,

No the MAS Doesn't need altering with a replacement air filter.

Did you reset your ECU after Cleaning the throttle bodies and replacing the Air Filter.

Remove Negative Feed for 20 mins i think that will put the ECU back into self learn mode and compensate for the improved air flow. If you have not done this you mixture ratios will be off which will cause bad peformance.

Cheers m8 ;) I'll give that a try. It is intermittent though so.....

I'll try it anyway. Anyone else had similar problems?

Nico, does that mean you should you reset the ECU after fitting a new exhaust system?

Cheers,

Andy

No Probs mate.

Barbel Yes, you will notice a lot more gains after you reset the ECU post Exhuast Install.

Anything that effects Air / Fuel flow to and from the engine, needs the ECU to be able to act on the new air / fuel flow characteristics. Thus hopefully increasing performance.

While your at it mate.

Check the connections on the MAS loom, it might not be gettin a good connection. As quiet a lot of aftermarker kits need the MAS to be relocated.

MAS problems should show up on the ECU and check engine light so do a ECU diagnosis. If your MAS is not funcitoning correctly your Car will let you know. As another member found out this morning :)

Hi Nico,

I'm not that good at this sort of thing. Do I have to disconnect the negative contection on the battery to reset the ECU? If I do, will this affect the immobiliser?

I hope you can help 'cos I'd love a bit of extra power. The car's an NA and the exhaust was installed a while ago, does this matter?

Cheers,

Andy

Hey

Timing / NA doesn't matter. if it hasn't been reset already chances are that you may get better performance / Fuel consumption out of it.

Secondly Yes disconnecting the Negative for about 20mins should do the trick for you.

It may upset or at least trigger the immobiliser. you will also probably loose the settings from your radio and it will activate any key code anti theft device on that so make sure you have the code / manual handy for both stereo and alarm before doing it.

Cheers Nico,

One ecu reset and test drive later and the problem hasn't reared it's ugly head - yet!!! I've also done a few other things aswell such as unplugging and reconnecting the ecu connector. I'll keep you informed of the outcome. As far as the MAS goes - its still in the original position...

Just taken it out for a 'proper' run - wahey!!! There's still a bit of hesitation in fifth but hey, its getting better! Usuall test run just gets to 100 before having to brake for the corner - tonight, a MAGIC figure of 115 and still going before I filled my pants and backed off. I might start resetting the ecu on a regular basis if this carries on!!!! Nico, you're a star - thanx again!!! If u come to Doncaster I might even donate a can of Stella to your beer fund - is that an Incentive???? ;)
